Beibut Shumenov vs. Hizni Altunkaya - Vacant WBA Belt - July 7, 2018
Two-division World Boxing Association (WBA) World Champion Beibut Shumenov announced his comeback fight will be held July 7, against 30-1 Hizni Altunkaya for the vacant WBA Cruiserweight World title, in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Shumenov (17-2, 11 KOs), a 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, retired last June due to an eye injury that required surgeries, forcing him to relinquish his WBA cruiserweight world title.
Shumenov vs. Altunkaya is a presentation of Shumenov's company, KZ Event Productions, Inc.
The July 7th gala event will be part of the 20th anniversary celebration of Astana being the capital of Kazakhstan. Many political dignitaries from Kazakhstan and around the World are expected to attend Shumenov's comeback fight.
"I'm happy to fight for my belt," Shumenov said from his training camp in Kazakhstan. "My eye is 100-percent and I'm excited about fighting again. I'm honored to fight on the 20th anniversary celebration of Astana as my country's capital. After this fight, I want Interim cruiserweight champion, Arsen Goulamirian."
WBA SETS NEW RECORD: 4 CHAMPS IN ONE WEIGHT CLASS!

Two years but ffs! At least have him in against someone half way relevant if it's a title fight. I use the term 'title fight' loosely!

Have him fight Lebedev? Leb did say he wanted to have a an interim bout before fighting WBSS winner.Stuarty wrote: ↑10 May 2018, 14:29Two years but ffs! At least have him in against someone half way relevant if it's a title fight. I use the term 'title fight' loosely!

He was champion when he vacated, so he naturally deserves first crack at the title when he returns. Nothing weird about that.
Although I do think this is a slap in the face of the WBSS, its not longer an undisputed Cruiserweight title. There's now another guy with a WBA "world" belt. They should have had him fight a non-title match before he got a crack. Just so the winner of the WBSS could be crowned and make history.
This is callous and reckless.

there already was a guy outside the tournament with a wba belt, its not a slap in the face because its not the top title in the wba. the wba title in the tournament is the one at the top of the hierarchy. the winner will certainly be undisputedDA1 wrote: ↑10 May 2018, 14:45He was champion when he vacated, so he naturally deserves first crack at the title when he returns. The WBA "world" (regular) title was the one IN the WBSS that Dorticos entered with. Are you referring to interim champ Arsen Goulmarian right? I don't know if he's champ anymore. He's not listed on the WBA website.
They upgraded the Regular belt in the tournament to Super. Either way, it takes away from the undisputed unification. Its not really undisputed. WBA itself is disputing it.
Edit: Arsen isn't listed on the champions page but he is on the WBA Rankings page at #1 as interim champ. But whoever wins the Regular belt isn't going to be #1 contender, they're going to be listed as champion then. Alongside the Super beltholder.

its not disputed who the top wba champ is though, the belt highest up is the one gassiev has. there is a whole hierarchy to belts which includes things lower down like intercontintal titles. highest up in the wba is the super title that is in the tournament. it doesnt take away at all for me that there is some vastly inferior fighter who will have a lower order wba title. when a wba regular champ meets a wba super champ, the winner doesnt get two wba titles, they are simply the super champ. its that title that needs to be won, not the lower order title.
i mean, if we want to go into it more, there are champs in organizations like the ibo and other orgs lower down. but rightfully ppl dont say those guys prevent the crowning of an undisputed champ.

I could live with that. Gassiev and Usyk would whip Lebedev. I don't want to see the winner fight him!Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑10 May 2018, 14:32Have him fight Lebedev? Leb did say he wanted to have a an interim bout before fighting WBSS winner.

The whole argument about titles and belts is based on lineage and name. Hence, why people are obsessed with the concept of undisputed and at the same time don't consider the IBO to be part of it. But the WBA "regular" belt IS their world belt. Its the one with the name and lineage. "Super" is their new belt. Yes, its the highest on the WBA hierarchy but that doesn't change the fact that Super is a new title they invented for people that are unified champs (albeit since then, you can inherit a Super title without being unified yourself).jamamb wrote: ↑10 May 2018, 14:57 its not disputed who the top wba champ is though, the belt highest up is the one gassiev has. there is a whole hierarchy to belts which includes things lower down like intercontintal titles. highest up in the wba is the super title that is in the tournament. it doesnt take away at all for me that there is some vastly inferior fighter who will have a lower order wba title. when a wba regular champ meets a wba super champ, the winner doesnt get two wba titles, they are simply the super champ. its that title that needs to be won, not the lower order title.

I could consider GGG undisputed, which I like to. But society states he isn't because Saunders holds a damn belt. I don't see this as radically different. If people aren't looking at record and simply who holds the trinket, then WBA world belt counts as one too,.

He's been out two years. If they/he insist(s) he fights for the strap it should be against someone halfway decent.DA1 wrote: ↑10 May 2018, 14:45He was champion when he vacated, so he naturally deserves first crack at the title when he returns. Nothing weird about that.

The WBA are letting him fight a scrub for a vacant strap! The WBC done it with Klitschko but he came straight back and fought the champion and took his belt. This is just another joke move by the WBA.

the wba super belt is the highest in the ladder, if you have the regular belt you can become mandatory CHALLENGER to the wba super champ. i find your reasoning pretty bizarre and im glad most dont seem to agree with you that the winner wont be undisputedDA1 wrote: ↑10 May 2018, 15:05The whole argument about titles and belts is based on lineage and name. the winner will be the top cruiser in the wba, wbc, ibf, and wbo. that is a fact. they wouldnt be anyones challenger in those organizations.; they are the kingpin. as long as thats the case everyone else is just a challenger to there position at the very top
that to me is clear undisputed.

Yes, you are "right"...this is what MOST people consider. And its logic like that which keeps the WBA and other orgs introducing sub World titles. Because what's the harm, ey?

Hizni Altunkaya ranked 144 with the independent PBO. Great opponent.

Well it depends, did he beat someone else who was higher ranked? Regional titles also push up a fighter but he doesn't seem to have one from the WBA.

There is a price list. Shumenov gets discounts.
Re: Beibut Shumenov vs. Hizni Altunkaya - Vacant WBA Belt - July 7, 2018
This is what I was about to post. The guy must have some dirt on someone. One judge gave him 7 rounds against Hopkins when he maybe won the first 3 and then got schooled for the rest of the fight. Then he has an interim belt made for him at Cruiser despite having no good wins at the weight. Then he's out of the ring for 2 years and comes back into another title fight.
