Sergey Kovalev vs. Eleider Alvarez - August 4, 2018
Eleider Alvarez is headed toward a light heavyweight title fight against Adonis Stevenson’s rival, not Stevenson.
Unable to come to a step-aside agreement with promoter Yvon Michel, BS.com has learned that Alvarez signed a contract Wednesday to challenge Sergey Kovalev for the WBO 175-pound championship sometime this summer. The Kovalev-Alvarez fight will be broadcast by HBO, but the date and venue haven’t been finalized.
Representatives for Kovalev and light heavyweight contender Marcus Browne were close to finalizing an agreement for Browne to face Kovalev (32-2-1, 28 KOs) sometime in July in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. Once it was revealed earlier this month, though, that Browne was arrested twice – once in December and once in March – for domestic incidents involving the mother of his daughter, with whom Browne has a custody agreement, Kovalev’s handlers began seeking other options.

What happened with Browne? Did he wet his pants?

Don't understand why Browne's arrests should cause panic and a need to change plans.
It's not like the boxing world doesn't have a fair share of jailbirds.
And we have a system of justice in our country. A system of jurisprudence. Has Browne been convicted over anything.
May be it's just political correctness.
At least Alvarez can fight, which is refreshing considering Kovalev has avoided live bodies since Ward undressed him.

RING magazine #4 as a replacement isn't too bad. Seemed like Stevenson/Alvarez was never going to happen so at least this way we'll finally get to see Alvarez in a good fight.
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Eleider Alvarez - TBA
This is even more interesting.

They probably just want to avoid finding themselves in the position Golovkin has been in for the past couple of weeks - by avoiding selecting an opponent who may become unable to fight on the agreed date (however small the chances are) due to out of ring circumstances.SenorPipino wrote: ↑18 Apr 2018, 13:08 Don't understand why Browne's arrests should cause panic and a need to change plans.

With Kovalev's controversial past, I doubt a bit of domestic violence is a major concern...

If murdering Don King could at one time rule the boxing world, what's a little physical disagreement between lovers??
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Eleider Alvarez - TBA
Absolutely freakin hilarious. Kovalev ending up fighting Chickenson's mandatory-in-waiting for how many years now? Unreal.
At least this fight will last longer than the 2-3 rounds that Browne would offer, but I still expect a stoppage here.

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Eleider Alvarez - TBA
Kovalev looks like a shell of the haughty, smug fighter he was before being humbled by Ward twice.
I think Sir Marcus would KO him. Alvarez stands a good chance of walking away with the decision.
Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Eleider Alvarez - TBA
Browne wouldn't last but a couple of rounds. Too open for counters.
Alvarez is too basic but appears durable.

So true. Alvarez deserves a chance at a belt. I would have preferred him to finally get his shot at Stevenson because he has waited so long, but at least this gives him a go.

Kovalev vs. Alvarez Finalized For August 4th in Atlantic City
BS.com has been advised that a date and venue has been finalized for the light heavyweight showdown between WBO world champion Sergey Kovalev and undefeated challenger Eleider Alvarez.
The HBO televised contest will take place on August 4th from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.
The actual deal was reached last month, after Alvarez - who was the mandatory challenger to WBC champion Adonis Stevenson - was unable to come to a step-aside agreement - as Stevenson will defend his title next Saturday against Badou Jack.
A press conference to officially announce the fight is already scheduled to take place this Saturday at the Hard Rock in New York City.

Meanwhile Adonis Stevenson hiding somewhere thanking God.
Now he doesn't have to face one of these guys.
WBC should seriously enlist a rule that if a mandatory forgoes his shot for 2 years then he loses that opportunity. Its the fighters ranked #2 to #15 that suffer. It makes it near-pointless to even be ranked on the WBC at that point. Why isn't the next top ranked guy getting their TS if the #1 doesn't want it? It makes no sense whatsoever.
Karo Murat or Joe Smith Jr should be receiving that mando WBC titleshot next. The WBC is a joke. They're out here even begging for a Canelo-GGG fight while their mandatory/interim champ is someone else.

Me too, but as a consolation prize- it's pretty darn decent
Thanks for starting this one off Ruthie
Has Krusher still got it?
Has Alverez been too inactive?

Alvarez is going to come to fight. I think with this, we going to have a lot of questions answered about both boxers. Dangerous fight for Kovalev and it's texhnically Alvarez's big shot. Pascal is his best win on paper, but he was past prime. A win here for Alvarez would do him a lot of favours. Finally. I do think Kovalev has enough in his tank to see his career go another 3-4 years. He seems the type.
He isn't regarded as dangerous anymore and TBH I thought that when Chilemba took him the distance.

Re: Sergey Kovalev vs. Eleider Alvarez - August 4, 2018
I always wondered why Stevenson didn't take on Alverez as his mandatory.
If you look at Alverez's resume, it's not that intimidating. And the fact that he has been on the bench getting step aside money for so long. It's been nearly a year since a slightly underwhelming points win against Pascal. And while one judge oddly gave it a draw, it still should have been a KO, given how shot, and there for the taking Jean is.
I can't pick a winner, but whoeverwhoever loses is probably going to take a major career hit.

kovalev most certainly is dangerous. he dropped chilemba and won like 9 rounds. he pretty much split the rounds vs the amazing ward, dropped him, and easily couldve won the first fight
if hes not dangerous who is

Sergey Kovalev vs. Eleider Alvarez
Sergey Kovalev, Eleider Alvarez in Atlantic city. First thoughts???
Easy win for Kovalev anytime his foes punching power is lacking, it'll be a short night.
