That's It (For Now At least)

Post by Ambling Alp II »

After giving this considerable thought, I think it is time stop contributing to the Boxing History Forum. I really enjoyed it for several years. It was fun discussing scores of different boxing topics with different posters. Some Topics I enjoyed I didn’t even post on; I enjoyed reading what others had to say. It used to be (and still could be) so much better than it is.

The Forum has been polluted by one particular poster and to a lesser extent a couple of others. He pretends to know a lot about the sport and claims to be a former fighter; it is quite clear neither is the case. He posts nonstop during every waking hour. I know whatever I post, he will post some garbage within a couple of hours, often with minutes. He often contradicts himself from earlier posts. He is often nasty as well. He routinely has broken Forum rules. The fact that I don’t have to mention his name and you know who I am talking about speaks volumes.

It used to be that posters had a lot of respect for the Boxers of the Past (as the Forum used to be called). People might disagree who was better Max Baer or Jack Sharkey or if Harry Greb was better than Carlos Monzon. However, they didn’t just assume that because one guy’s era was prior to when they first started following the sport that the guy was automatically not that good.

There used to be a lot more thought. We used to discuss what a fighter could actually do. It used to be about speed, power, defense, chin, stamina, smarts, and heart. We used to talk about left hooks, uppercuts, jabs, over hand rights etc. We don’t do that much anymore at all.

When someone starts an interesting topic, it gets shouted down by people who know little about the sort and spout off silly things like “Fighter A weighs 240, so he would beat Fighter B who weighs 215.” Quickly we hear about meaningless stats about win/loss records (regardless of the competition), the number of title defenses against stiffs, and with heavyweights, the weight. Always the frikkin weight.

In the past we had Granberry and Il Duce who were similar to the Village Idiot. People with way too much time on their hands and who were more interested in being obnoxious than contributing.

And we lost several members before Boxrec got rid of them. However, with the Village Idiot, Boxrec only gives him an occasional 1 month ban. He has had at least three that I can recall. Yet nothing permanent. What would it take to get rid of him for good?

We have lost so many good posters who knew the sport, loved the sport and respected it’s rich history. The Great John L., dempseyfire, Ezzard, expug,Crease, barry, boxscribe, cap, pundit, I Feel Fine, Borinken, sockdolager, Seamus and scores of others either are gone or very rarely post anymore.

There are still several posters on here that I like and respect, even if we don’t all agree all of the time. However, good discussions almost always get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of garbage that gets in the way. It’s like having an interesting discussion at a party or a bar and some obnoxious person interrupts with stupid comments.

Anyway, I am giving up on the Forum (like so many have done before me). Hopefully not for good, if things change, but it doesn’t look promising. It is not fun anymore.

Alp must be talking about himself...

It will be one HELL of a lot more pleasant around here without some pain-in-the-ass constantly claiming that boxers who weigh under 200 usually beat guys who weigh over 220... Therefore eliminating the most famous fights in Fistic History where size and strength played an important role in who won – Such as: Liston vs Patterson 1 and 2.... Foreman vs Frazier 1 and 2.... Mike Tyson vs Michael Spinks... Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson... Wladimir Klitschko vs Alexander Povetkin and David Haye... Anyone who claims height, weight, reach, and strength play no part in who wins is truly a Village Idiot.

Obviously being bigger or taller doesn't make you a better technical fighter... Height, weight, reach, and strength are only 4 of 38 attributes that help make somebody a world class athlete – aside from his skill at a particular sport...

It's idiotic to claim that size and strength play NO role in who wins in the sport of Boxing if all other physical, athletic, and skill based attributes are equal among the combatants .... This is WHY Boxing has weight divisions and Tennis doesn't.

The advantages of height, weight, and reach were never more pronounced than when a clumsy and inept plodder like Primo Carnera beat ATG Tommy Loughran... Virtually every skill and athletic advantage was on the side of Loughran.

Enjoy your time off Alp and hope you return, In the meantime watch the Francois Botha vs Sonny Bill Williams fight, and see how a super athletic world class athlete from another sport (hint hint) does against an ancient, faded, fat, flabby boxer. If only they would have let it go the scheduled 12.

Okay shnookie.... Thanks for the backup.. :TU: :yay:

I have to confess that I was never cultured enough to love Opera.... But Verdi's play was one that really gripped me... It seems like everybody who was an evil sort died.... Leonora, who was a saint also dies when she could have had Alvaro at the end... I assume you think I'm the Alvaro character... I survive while everyone around me dies like dried up flowers.

It's a sad story for I should have know better and pulled Leonora away from Carlo... Have I got this right? :maybe:

Well.... Williams only had 5 fights and Botha was 45 years old... So why wouldn't it be sloppy?

Plus you never saw Ali-Evangelista... Those 2 won the "Nobel Peace Prize for Promoting Non-Violence in Boxing."

Sorry to hear this.

Probably the only thing a bit more sketchy than a series of odd opinions is someone feeling that if only those odd opinions would go away, or be squelched..... my presence could be sustained.

But as long as those odd opinions are allowed, I must walk away.

Feels like a "Shane" moment.

Alp....I wish you well and I wish you would reconsider....it just seems wrong somehow.....though you are simply exercising your freedom to express what you feel....... which is never wrong. But the passive request seems to be....."squelch odd opinions, and I would be more comfortable here. Which is often the case for many of us....but should that guide things as a rule?

seems odd....though I'm probably alone on that score.

Sorry it has come to this.....

Kalan.....your series of unfortunate opinions comes with a price.

It's not unfortunate opinions. It's outright stupidity accompanied with rudeness. Which is obvious to everyone except you apparently. You're the lone Kalan supporter around here, and have played as much a part in ruining the forum by allowing him to run amok as he himself has.

And you know I Love ya Buzz, but goddamn...that's just the way it is.

BuzzBox... Your opinions aren't odd... They're freakin' NUTS!!! ... For instance... If you knew anything about Queesberry Rules you would have heard of the Neutral Corner Rule... You and Gilgemesh don't think it should be enforced (if it's Ali).

And you don't seem to be able to follow videos.... When one guy is making excuses and refusing to sign for a fight that's being heavily promoted in the media--and says ""I accept your challenge... As SOON as I fight a few more contenders... IF I beat THEM" .... YOU say the other guy won't sign...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF57P1uUG0s
Try to listen more closely this time as to who wants the other to sign.

Gilgemesh.. You're the individual who comes across as totally ignorant and rude... At least they ban a jerk like Old-n-Moldie.. You think because you're a moderator you can run your mouth non-stop and people have to take it... Your opinions are just as ridiculous as any I've seen and you provide no rhyme or reason for them... You apparently think the Neutral Corner Rule doesn't apply to Ali and he can do whatever he wants without being point deducted or DQ'd.

You've just about punched your ticket Kalan. You've been allowed to ruin this forum long enough, and you're either gonna tone it down or ship it out.

Buzz won't do the right thing so I will.

Disagree with people all you want. Give moronic opinions all you want, but be civil toward the other posters or you won't be a poster here anymore.

Alp has been a huge part of this forum and as much as I don't like "I'm leaving" posts it will drop the quality to see him go. It's too bad that we've lost several good posters to save a bad one. I just appreciate you actually making an effort. I stopped posting in this section some time ago because of it.
