How could Linares beat Lomachenko?

Post by jpspice »

I predict that Lomachenko's natural style will prove to be pretty effective against Linares. But I have been thinking about what JL could do to beat Loma. My suggestion would be 1) Jab relentlessly ( double up on the jab) 2) Maintain a body attack from the opening bell (to limit Loma from slipping out of the pocket and throwing those crazy, in motion backwards counter shots and neutralize his offense by making him protect his body)
3) More upper body movement (JL can tend towards being a somewhat stationary stalker which may not be smart against Loma who is a speedy precision puncher.)

Looking forward to a great fight!

If I were Linares I'd try and keep my distance behind solid jabs and body shots should it go inside early and take it from there.

Linares is a great boxer a LEGEND of the sport and truly A good guy, but alas he doesn't posess the skill set to take lom on front on. Hel have to make it scrappy use his natural weight size do holding and try to take lom into the later rounds with lom maybe not so sharp and try to land some meaningful punches for the KO.

Yeah, for sure. Use his reach. Jab even when it isn't landing.
Maybe a bit of stick and move, unless Loma out moves him, which I think he will.
The best thing he can do is not quit. Losing to Loma is nothing to be ashamed about, but quitting is.

You never know how a fight is gonna play out until it happens, but unless Linares has summoned the ghost of Eddie Futch in his corner, I can't see a strategy for him to win. He just doesn't box with the style needed to trouble Loma. I don't see that in his repertoire, regardless of his training camp.

I'll humor you, though. One of Linares' apparent weaknesses (the willingness to engage in trench warfare instead of sticking to his fundamentals) against other fighters could end up being a positive for him here. He ain't beating Loma with fundamentals. He's gonna have to get in and fight. The sooner he takes on that mentality tomorrow night (I don't see it happening early), the better his chances against the smaller guy without much pop.

Keep it long and keep working that jab, try and change angles when he does, dont be repetitive, when up close be rough, very rough, hit the body hard, easier said than done but linares is a class act and is capable of pulling this off.

Yes easier said than done. Not sure if this could help him win it as loma is special but as others posters have been saying...distance, jab, target the body, fight on the back foot and negative imo. If linares has that nut in him maybe only punch when Lomas punching and/or hitting him if ppl know what I’m trying to say. Only think that could work as linares is bigger and would be better able to take a loma punch to land one.

It's a tough ask, as accurate and well timed as Linares shots are, Loma will just be too quick and slick for him.

Given Loma's upper body movement, Linares will have to be willing to miss e few shots to land one. He should look for body shots right from the first bell as they are more likely to land and may slow Loma down the strecth.

Linares will be the bigger man though, so should try and get up close amd impose the size advantage whenever he can.

Bit just feel that any tactic Linares tries will not be enough as Loma will find a way to work around it.

Bit I am looking forward to this fight though, as both men are good to watch when in full flow.

Yeah, footwork and jabs. That's boxing fundamentals in a nutshell.

Get dirty.

It worked for Salido. Take the smooth boxer out of his comfort zone. Take him out of his game and keep him uncomfortable.

Linares isn't going to win this fight on point, so if the ref deducts a few points now and then, so what?

Of course in a roughhouse bout, there's an increased likelihood that Linares' thin tender skin will bust open.

But so what? He needs to do something unorthodox to upset the apple cart.

Right now Lomachenko is between a 1-16 and 1-20 favorite.
