Brothers in arms

Post by daddy-o »

I recently attended a dinner show at the Royal International Hotel in Russell Square. Last bout of the night (there were only four fights on the show) was between a chap named Duncan Cottier and a young man named Jamal Morrison, who looked quite impressive for the first two rounds but appeared to run out of steam towards the end.
Just after the decision, which was a draw and probably fair, I overheard two guys talking at the bar and one of them said that a couple of years ago Morrison fought his own brother in the ABA's. Does anybody know who won, how the fight went, eg were they cautious/tentative of each other or did they go hell for leather?
Also does anybody have any views or opinions as to whether brothers who are the same weight should be permitted to fight each other at all?

What's the problem with brothers fighting each other? It's a sport. The Williams sisters meet each other every now and then in tennis. Of course they don't have to punch each other but they'll do what's necessary to win.
In the 1996 Olympic Qualifiers in Denmark, Malik Beyleroglu, Turkey (formerly Agayev) and Adaliat Agayev, Azerbaijan fought each other. They are brothers who competed for different countries. After two close rounds they hugged each other before starting the third and then suddenly Agayev went down from a body shot and was stopped. Beyleroglu went on to win a silver medal at the Olympics.
I also believe brothers Roel and Mansueto Velasco of Philippines, both olympic medallists, have fought numerous times.
