A great fight Duran V. Ray Lampkin
A great fight Duran V. Ray Lampkin
I remember watching this fight on TV in 1975 (Either Sports Spectacular or WWoS). Anyway, it was a tough fight for the hands of stone and ended in sudden fashion as I remember. Close tough fight that Duran swears he was out of shape for. The ko came suddenly and brutally. I'm going to watch again this evening and post on Classic Fights you recently watched. We never hear about this one, but it was a good one! One could see Lampkin succumbing to the humidity and the pressure from Duran. Hope you enjoy it too!

Ray Lampkin really slugged it out with the great Roberto Duran. He really did. Not that hogwash baloney about Sugar Ray Leonard made a mistake fighting Duran's fight, when in reality, he was fighting for survival.

For some reason the original vid didn't finish. Here is the Cosell versionoogiebe wrote: ↑12 May 2018, 14:00 I remember watching this fight on TV in 1975 (Either Sports Spectacular or WWoS). This was the infamous "If I had been in better shape, Lampkin wouldn't be going to the hospital. He would be going to the morgue" fight.
Duran wasn't the kind of guy to worry too much about a fallen opponent.

Great finish from Duran but he was sluggish for much of this one.

Lampkin was always an excellent fighter.
His speed along with respectable power simply kept Duran from walking through him. Until Lampkin began to wilt in the Panama heat and humidity.

Re: A great fight Duran V. Ray Lampkin
Exactly right. I'm surprised this fight isn't up the ATG fight list somewhere and/or for someone. I remember this fight (obviously) just as it was...exciting and filled with drama. Lampkin never got the respect he deserved and Duran showed why he was so feared at LW. None better.SenorPipino wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 10:02 Lampkin was always an excellent fighter.

Re: A great fight Duran V. Ray Lampkin
The devastating KO loss to Duran pretty much finished Lampkin as a contender.
He fought for just another year or so, and was soundly beaten by Vilomar Fernandez and quickly stopped by Randy Shields.
I saw a few of those fights and Lampkin seemed a little gun shy and didn't take a punch as well.
Getting knocked cold by Duran kind of put a damper on Lampkin's career.

I do remember how Lampkin fell off the proverbial cliff. He was so good in this fight, boggles the mind.SenorPipino wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 12:04 The devastating KO loss to Duran pretty much finished Lampkin as a contender.

Yes, it was a great fight between Roberto Duran and Ray Lampkin. But Lampkin was severely injured in the bout and was hospitalized with some doubt that he would survive. As a result, I thought that a lack of class was shown on the part of CBS by showing footage of the knockout of Lampkin in the bout at the end of its CBS Sports Spectacular shows for quite awhile afterwards.

totally forgot about that! There was concern for Lampkin after that fight. Great point out!Chuck1052 wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 12:39 Yes, it was a great fight between Roberto Duran and Ray Lampkin. My recollection also was that Lampkin sustained moderate head injuries from the knockout and was in a Panamanian hospital for a while.
I checked boxrec's listing of the fight under Lampkin's record and it mentions that Lampkin was only "briefly" hospitalized.
That doesn't jive with your or my recollection of the seriousness of Lampkin's head trauma.
I also remember wondering if Lampkin could get licensed in the US following the KO, so there must have been reports back then on how serious the KO was.
Re: A great fight Duran V. Ray Lampkin
Chuck is right. Lampkin had serious head trauma and was never the same. BoxRec is by far not the be all end all.SenorPipino wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 13:37Chuck1052 wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 12:39 Yes, it was a great fight between Roberto Duran and Ray Lampkin. If I can't rely on Boxrec, where else is there to go? Ring magazine long ago lost it's credibility as the Bible of Boxing.
Thinking back I do remember a photo published in Ring of a gaunt looking Lampkin leaving the hospital in a wheelchair with his head still wrapped in bandages.
Almost like he had brain surgery.
Really, it's incredible he was ever licensed to box again. I wonder if the same leniency would be shown today by commissions.

Use searches and such for articles; other boxing sites; etc. (if that was tongue in cheek, LOL). Back then, they didn't really care for the fighters. Ignorance and greed. Now it's knowledge and greed! LOL!

That's a remarkable fight.....what a finish. I remember watching it.....and felt it was contested pretty much all the way.

Re: A great fight Duran V. Ray Lampkin
I remember discussing the fight with someone here a few years ago.
He insisted that Duran was barely up on the scorecards at the time of the KO.
I have never found what the official scores were at the end so I'm dubious about that.
Duran was the world champion and a hero in Panama where the fight was held. Not yet a legend, but definitely a national hero.
On top of that, the judges were amazingly all Panamanians.
I figure there was no way in hell that those judges were scoring it close, even though Lampkin was competitive until late.
Anyone know those mysterious scorecards?

I won't bother researching...moot point. I had the fight close enough to be nervous, seeing it live on TV.oogiebe wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 16:28Good thing Lampkin was KTFO.SenorPipino wrote: ↑13 May 2018, 16:25 I remember discussing the fight with someone here a few years ago.

Why were you nervous?
Re: A great fight Duran V. Ray Lampkin
At the time it was a tough go the first half of the fight. Reports of scorers having Lampkin ahead on points were mentioned. I was used to Duran dominating. Looking back it was all Duran, but Lampkin did himself proud.
