countering jabs

Post by Yuzo »

theres only two slipping motions.

you can slip his jab inside.

or you can slip his jab outside.

slip his jab outside, through the space next to your left ear and over your left shoulder, and, as his jab is retracting out of your slip space, come back over the top with your counter right hand.

Image

the trick is, you start your slipping motion when you see his jab extending, and, when you start to feel his jab retracting out of your slip space, you chase it with your counter right hand on its way back home.

slip his jab outside, through the space next to your left ear and over your left shoulder, and come back up under with your counter right uppercut.

the best time to throw this counter is when a guy steps in to jab. cause when a guy steps in to jab, you wont have room to fully extend your counter right hand. so when you dont have room to fully extend your counter right hand, you come back up under with your counter right uppercut.

the motion you make to slip a jab inside is the same motion you make to throw a right hand. so your right hand is actually a slipping motion and a punch all in one. thus, your right hand is already, naturally, a counter punch.

slip a jab inside, through the space next to your right ear and over your right shoulder, and, in the same motion, throw your right hand.

Image

the trick is to slip and punch all in one motion.

but what happens to a lot of guys when they try to throw this counter is they get their arm stuck on the other guys arm.

Image

when you get your arm stuck on the other guys arm heres what you do.

the trick is to slip and punch in two motions. you start your slipping motion when you see his jab extending, but instead of throwing your right hand in the same motion, you throw your right hand when you start to feel his jab retracting out of your slip space.

Image

you dont throw your right hand when his jab is fully extended. you throw your right hand when you start to feel his jab retracting out of your slip space, because of the way his arm is retracting back to his body in a v shape, thus freeing up its path. therefore its better to throw an overhand right than a straight right in this context. it gives his jab more time to retract back to his body in a v shape than a straight right does, as it takes a more roundabout route to get from point a to point b than a straight right does.

Good post.

When I was a kid boxing, the most important thing we were taught was to snap out your jab and return it to your chin as quickly as possible...... still amazes me to this day to see pro fighters throw out a lazy jab and even sometimes as shown in some of them clips, they leave their hands in!!

That's the principle of good countering though, it's all about timing and shot selection, the outside slip and uppercut in that clip is a peach.

slip his jab inside, through the space next to your right ear and over your right shoulder, and, in the same motion, transfer your body weight over your front leg. now, with your body weight concentrated over your front leg, throw your hook.

when a guy is throwing his jab just short, so it does not enter into your slip space, you have to try to force each jab to pass through your slip space to counter. thats why some guys come in with so much head movement. they are trying to force jabs to pass through their slip space so they can counter.

but some guys wont try to force jabs to pass through their slip space. they just pull away from it.

Image

you dont try to slip his jab. you just peel your face away from his jab same way you'd peel skin away from a fruit.

Image

and as you reset back into your stance, you throw your right hand in the same motion, chasing his jab on its way back.

Image

you pull away. you come back throwing your right hand.

Image

the best time to throw this counter is when a guy is throwing his jab just short. cause when a guy is throwing his jab just short, it wont enter into your slip space, making a slipping motion excessive. this gets your right hand there quicker.

Beautiful examples given Yuzo, and a great explanation all the way around. Nobody could say it any better.

Great thread Yuzo. It's unconventional, but Jersey Joe Walcott's KO of Ezzard Charles is a great example of slipping inside the jab.

i thought it was more a jab/overhand right from Sexton that Fury threw the right hand in the middle of- Sexton taking the punch as his right shoulder was coming forward having retracted too far (telegraphing) to create the arc for the overhand. Hughie tried that one for size and buzzed him with it earlier, maybe 2/3rd round. good to see him taking the opportunity when the other bloke opened himself up.

slip a southpaw jab inside through the space next to your right ear and over your right shoulder.

Image

throw your right hand in the same motion.

Image

your head is going to slip his jab.

Image

and your right hand is going to counter his jab in one smooth motion.
