Re: Joe Louis in 1935
I knew Paul Cavalier very well, in fact when he died I gave the Eulogy and Bell (9) Count at his wake. He was Louis's sparring partner and was never KO'ed by Louis during those sparring sessions Plus never fought him in a regular fight.
Re: Joe Louis in 1935
Joe went on a short exhibition tour at this time and went four two-minute rounds (one round each) with the same four sparring partners: Paul Cavalier, Stanley Ketchell, Mickey McAvoy, and Andy Wallace. Sometimes the opponents went down or were counted out during the one round, as they had to be ready and able for the next stop on the tour and did not want / need to take an excessive beating on any one stop. As far as I can determine, the tour went something like:
November 11 - Montreal
November 13 - Toronto
November - Ottawa
November - Quebec
November 18 - Waterbury, CT
November 19 - Providence, RI
November 20 - Portland, ME
November 21 - Bangor, ME
Joe went into training for his next bout right after the last stop.
