James Broad
James Broad
Did the 1980 Olympic Trials winner fight in any National Golden Gloves or National AAU tourneys?

He was a late starter so I wouldn't expect that he did. But damn man! How'd you dig him up? I was like, "Sh#t, I remember that guy."
Re: James Broad
I only remember him KO'ing Marvis Frazier. He fought for the Army so he got into the Olympic trials through the Armed Forces tournament. Marvis got a bad pinched nerve or something when he was KO'd. He had to have surgery on it.
Re: James Broad
He was a fair fighter if I remember correctly. (great! Now I have to look him up!) Thanks for the memory!
Re: James Broad
I remember, or I think I remember, another fight where Marvis outpointed Broad.
If you young ones don't remember Broad, think Breazeale.

I was thinking about him awhile back. He was a real good pro for about 2, 3 years. Knocked out Bonecrusher with a body shot. But I thought I read somewhere that Tony Tubbs had beaten him as an amateur, which was why I was asking the question. Shame he ended up like he did, maybe could have been world champ.
Re: James Broad
I never did know what happened to him. He was a flash and then done, to your point.Nile4000 wrote: ↑14 May 2018, 16:00oogiebe wrote: ↑09 May 2018, 16:57https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Broad#Amateur

Re: James Broad
They say he died of Pugilistic Dementia, in his hometown of Greensboro, NC in 2001
Re: James Broad
True. And I would've given his a decent shot at beating Stevenson for the gold if they fought.
Re: James Broad
Lol! Like who killed JFK? Teofilo/Ali was contemplated often in the '70s after the Bobbick shellacking in munich.

Re: James Broad
I think the young Broad was much more stylish and obviously gifted than the ungainly Breazeale. The later, fatter Broad who waddles forward trying to clobber his opponent is an odd one--I wonder what happened to his nice jab, his punch selection?

Re: James Broad
Always respected Teo, but some overrate him a bit.

Re: James Broad
One thing about Woody Clark, that guy fought everybody.
