Fidel LaBarba Query

Post by Ric »

Per The Los Angeles Times of Nov. 22, 1921, LaBarba D-4 Benny Marks the evening before at the Hollywood American Legion Stadium. There was another LaBarba, at 135 lbs., who had a four-rounder (result not given) with a ? Duffy on this card for the "Jinnistan Grotto Patrol festivities."

Fidel LaBarba is still an amateur at this time (there were some other 3-rounders on this show). He's about 105 lbs..
Query: Because this was a four-rounder, is it considered a pro bout that should be added to his record? (Amateur rules at this time prohibit draws.)
If so, this certainly would not be good for his eligibility for the 1924 Olympics. He probably didn't get paid for this bout, though.

At this time some amateur bouts went as high as 5 rounds.

Also, it ws not unusual for an extra round to be fought is the 3-rounder wound up as a draw.

I would think this was an amateur fight.
