Need Help With Heavyweight Fight From Around 20 Years Ago

Post by Taansend »

Hello Chaps,

I remember watching a heavyweight fight, sometime between 1992 & 2000, and am trying to remember the participants.

Here's what Taansends f*cked up brain can remember.

It was between two British heavyweight fighters (It might have only been one).

One of the fighters was from SE London. A light skinned black bloke (I thought it might be Wayne Llewelyn but looks like no).

Neither fighter was that good, not that bad.

The underdog was winning. At the start of the last round the underdog came out to do the touch gloves/hug thing & the favourite/losing fighter slugged him & (I think) won by KO.

I think the fight was in America. Or maybe I was in America.

Most of these clues might be right.

Does anyone have any ideas :maybe:

The fight you're describing resembles a Terrence Lewis fight that occured in the same timeframe, but neither boxer was from London...

Michael Rush vs

1998-07-19207 Terrence Lewis

24 3 0

236½

W

DQ

10/10

Lewis DQ'd for sucker punching Rush after the referee instructed the fighters to touch gloves prior to the start of the 10th and final round.
Rush, who was ahead on all three scorecards at the time, was knocked flat and given several minutes to recover.
The bout continued, but with Rush still shaky, the referee eventually decided to stop the fight and DQ Lewis.

Excellent memory/research if correct :TU:

I was trying to remember the other day whether Terrence Lewis was dead or not and ended up browsing his record, and Taansend's post reminded me of what I had seen! Quite the fluke if it's the fight he's looking for. That being said neither boxer is British or light skinned so perhaps it isn't - unless his rum sozzled memory has meshed elements from other fights into one.

Not James Oyebola v Cliften Mitchell??

Mitchell was winning before getting knocked out

Oyebola vs Scott Welsh was in new Jersey??

Maybe its a combination of all these fights!!

Curiously enough, the victim Michael Rush is actually billed as being from 'Manchester,' Georgia, which could have implanted the British connection in ye sconce. Anyway glad to be of service. What a fluke!

What a vile character Terrence Lewis was. Heavy handed but too gutless to put it to use most of the time. Laughed my head off when a 40 year old Greg Page came off the floor to do him.

Wayne Llewellyn did fight in the US around the same time so maybe that's where the confusion came from :maybe:

Sounds to me like this bout had one indecisive referee. He first let Rush recover from the sucker punch thrown by Lewis, without DQ'ing Lewis immediately. Then he allowed the fight to continue. Then he though, "Well, this guys is not doing too good now. So I guess I will DQ the other fella for throwing the sucker punch that I let him get away with in the first place."

Maybe that referee had been sucker punched one too many times himself.
