If Hughie Vacates

Post by Belaqua »

As is strongly rumoured, who do you think will box for the vacant title?

Joyce as Commonwealth champ is the logical choice for one, but Whyte is close to a world title shot, Chisora will want silly money, Price may fancy trying to get the final notch on the belt, Frank probably has other plans for Dubois (and is he still too young?) Cornish/Sexton are surely out of contention, so Gorman, Webb?

Joyce v Gorman?

I don’t like the way any prospects queue for British title order.

Like Whyte has a go,so Hughie doesn’t.Then Hughie does,so Joyce doesn’t.Then Joyce does and Dubois will wait in the wings until there is an ‘easy’ vacant shot. How about some of these pretenders just fight each other?

Without checking I think Sexton was the first 'champion' since Price to actually try defend it?

Joshua, Whyte, Hughie all vacating without defending.

Really sad to see a once prestigious title discarded so readily.

Yeh you're right. In the last 10 years around 2 boxers have defended it. The rest all vacated.

I think Danny Williams was the last one to win the belt outright?

I dont think its history is that bad over the last decade

Danny had it, defended it, then lost it to Chisora,
Chisora also made a defence before he lost it to Fury
Fury did vacate it yep. Wanted to plot a path to World honours but his and the Price team should have agreed terms
Price won it and defended it a few times before vacating it after having the snot beaten out of him by Tony Thompson
Fury won it again but vacated once he won the World title
AJ won it and then also vacated when he won the World title
Whyte won it and then vacated it rather than fight Sexton
Sexton won it and tried to defend it but lost to Hughie

Apart from Whyte, all champs either defended or vacated for legit reasons.

Hughie is now the mando for Joyce's Commonwealth belt I think. Instead of vacating why not fight Joyce for both belts?

That's the logical step but Pete's already said they 'have no interest in facing Joyce'

The problem is that the prestige of the British title for a heavyweight opens up big paying fights which are too attractive to turn down

Again from memory,

Williams lost it to Sprott, regained from Gammer, THEN lost to Chisora.

Chisora lost it in his first defence to Fury.

Fury vacated to fight Rogan for the Irish title (hardly a 'path to a world title')

Price made two defences, vacated.

Chisora/Fury fought for vacant title.

Duck?
Pete implied that because Joyce has only had four fights he doesn't deserve a fight with 'uncrowned world Champion' Hughie.

Surely the BBBoC will nominate Whyte for it?

I wonder if this might also appeal to Bellew? Yes he is craving the big fights but he is also a bit of a tradition type fight - and whilst he has held a British title, nothing sounds better than British Heavyweight champion.

Sounds good.

There are lots of good combos for the vacant title, but there's a good chance that we will end up with a duff one.

Bellew v Whyte doubling up as a WBC eliminator would be great.

Duck?
It's not a duck. There is no upside to facing a 4 fight novice.
If Hughie wins he beat a rookie.
If he loses he got beat by a novice.
It's lose lose

I take your point however, if he wins he picks up the commonwealth belt.

Risk vs reward. I'm sure if team Joyce comes up with an astronomical figure Hughie would accept.
But the fight doesn't sell and couldn't draw enough for a huge purse

There was nothing better than a good old fashioned British Heavyweight title fight, there were a few stinkers but plenty of thrillers too, sadly there are plenty of options available now so the title has been devalued considerably, bring back the British,European and Commonwealth title fights.

He will probably go after the alphabet groups regional titles to gain a high rating.
He's looking for a world title and not going to settle for domestic belts.

It's a shame

It's still a duck.

If he actually fights someone better than Joyce in his next fight then maybe it's not a duck.

I said the last decade, hence did not refer to Williams previous .

Price vacated after having the shite kicked out of him, twice, as I said which was the right decision.
