2 overpaid footballers have a scuffle, which involves about 2 punches and a ripped shirt, and over a year later Lee Bowyer is going on to face a 4 day trial on a ‘public order’ offence.
4 days?? How long does it take to study a 10 second video clip anyway?
You couldn’t make it up. Have the bobbies nothing better to do than work on a case like that?
And if they are bringing a case for this, can we now look forward to the dibbles watching every Rugby match on Sky and bringing a prosecution every time 2 guys square up to one another?

Hmmm, it is an odd one admittedly. I think it also centres around the fact its football, as much as Bowyer.
Of course rugby players have far more serious dust-ups. But there is also a common understanding that its part of the game (rightly or wrongly) and that it seldom, if ever, escalates beyond the moment and is forgotten about come the final whistle. The other fact is that rugby supporters watching it don’t feel the need to imitate it. Rugby supporters are still mixed in grounds remember, there is never any trouble…
The “establishment” have probably decided that Bowyer’s behaviour would send a signal to football fans watching, including kids, that this sort of behaviour is acceptable (as supporters in certain sections of most football grounds still have a combined IQ of 38…). Add into the equation that football (and especially English football) has an appalling record for crowd violence etc, and this is why the Police have got funny about it all.
Football has worked hard to clean up its image on both violence and racism, and Bowyer has been publicly linked to both.
It is unfair, I agree, but if he gets done for it, then with his past record it “couldn’t happen to a nicer bloke” as they say….
I hope he does time.

My perception of Bowyer is limited to what I read in the press & like you I don’t the man at all.
Your thoughts have presented an angle I hadn’t considered into why the authorities are keeping this case high profile.
Nevertheless it is surprising how much police time and effort is being put into something that is so trivial.
Whilst writing this I have been reminded by a workmate about when Duncan Ferguson was sent to prison for headbutting an opponent in a Rangers game years ago.

Bowyer really never got his act together and should act better as a PROFESSIONAL footballer and rolemodel, beating an asian kid into a coma in leeds with 15 others (I went to uni with the kids mate), going into Macdonalds and saying vocally he wants someone else to serve him because 'he isn't getting served by a paki', and brawling on the football pitch......
