At their ideal weights, eg De LaHoya at superfeather, my list would be something like this-
1. Roy Jones Jr
2. Floyd Mayweather
3. Bernard Hopkins
4. Oscar De LaHoya
5. Kostya Tszyu
6. James Toney
7. Julio Cesar Chavez
8. Lennox Lewis
9. Ronald Winky Wright
10. Felix Trinidad
There are a whole host of other fighters that one could choose to admit into the top ten of the past 16 years including Barrera, Morales, Whittaker, Holyfield, Jackson, Bowe, Eubank to name but a a few

Seeing Calzaghe on this list right after DLH makes my stomach cramp - what on earth has he done to deserve that ranking? Many fighters belong above him, he's probably barely top 30. If you're after a 168/175 fighter, Dariusz Michalczevski for example has a 10 times better claim.Syntax Error wrote:1- Roy Jones Jr

4- Ricardo Lopez
5- Evander Holyfield
6- Bernard Hopkins
7- Felix Trinidad
8- Oscar De La Hoya
9- Joe Calzaghe
10- Shane Mosley
I'll probably change my mind tomorrow!!!!
Lennox is too high but he's earned his spot on the list. I feel pretty Boy should be there, as should JCC.

If we all agreed with you, this forum would not exist.

You're right.generic screen name wrote:Pernell had the WBC welterweight belt from '93-'97 and was in the pound for pound rankings till the later '90s. Plus he had a draw against Julio Cesar Chavez, which he clearly won. Give him atleast some love!!!!
I do actually rate him highly.
There was a thread about the best fighters since 1980 recently & I had him at number 1.
That's the thing about these lists, if I did one today, it would differ from my first.

Let me reiterate; when you said best fighters 'since' 1990, I took that to mean, fighters who won their first titles since 1990.Migz wrote:but if calzaghe is listed im sure Whitaker should be
If you look at my list, there is one common theme, they all acquired their first world titles after Jan 1st 1990 & were major players for long periods after that.
Yes, Pernell Whitaker is great & I have said already that in a previous thread about top 5 fighters since 1980, I rated PW at number 1, but I never ranked him in the best since 1990 because he was already a dominant champ before 1990.

I know, but the cruiserweight division is a lame duck division that was in it's infancy back in 1986.Decagon wrote:Not to be a pest, but you did list Evander Holyfield, and he won his first title in 1986.Syntax Error wrote:Let me reiterate; when you said best fighters 'since' 1990, I took that to mean, fighters who won their first titles since 1990.Migz wrote:but if calzaghe is listed im sure Whitaker should be

It was considered a joke then & some esteemed boxing mags refused to recognise it all.
One of those mags even made Holyfield it's fighter of the year in 1987 & always ranked him in it's heavyweight rankings.
In my eyes, Evander was a heavyweight contender going into the 1990's & won his first title in 1990.

Ummmm, in the 80s there was a fight considered the best cruiserweight fight of all time between him and Dwight Muhammad Qawi, so your saying Qawi was a joke??? Some people consider Evander's cruiserweight reign as his prime. And the cruiserweight division started in the earlier 80's not 1986. It just makes no sense to say, or even consider, Evander's first title was in the 90s when it really was not.Syntax Error wrote:Decagon wrote:Not to be a pest, but you did list Evander Holyfield, and he won his first title in 1986.Syntax Error wrote: Let me reiterate; when you said best fighters 'since' 1990, I took that to mean, fighters who won their first titles since 1990.

The Qawi-Holyfield 1 (& fight 2 for that matter) fight was excellent, but like I said about Holyfield being fighter of the year in 1987, they did not acknowledge the division, just the fighter & the actual fight.
Look back & you will see that the division was not even recognised by some boxing mags & frowned upon by many.
Even now, the division gets little coverage & the best of the division are always looking to move up.
Bear in mind that I'm just trying to dig myself out of a hole that I've made for myself.

I know it was created before 1986; when did I say otherwise?generic screen name wrote:Just back up your facts, thats all I'm saying.... and yes the cruiserweight division was created before 1986 just ask Carlos De Leon, and Qawi who fought for cruiserweight titles in 1980 and 1985 respectively.
It WAS still in it's infancy in 1986; how many times do I have to say the same thing?
Yes, my facts are correct.
This is BOXREC & I don't need to be told things. If I am not sure about something, I can look it up on the BOXREC homepage.
