Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
So Rivas' fight this evening is for the NABF HW championship. He wins this what's next for him? I believe he moves into the top 20 and next fight against a contender. The guy can thud and hasn't much more time at 30.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
You think a win over Herve Hubeaux puts someone in the top 20??? Washington, Mansour, and Kevin Johnson have better wins than that.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Hubeaux has never been stopped. So I will be impressed if Rivas can light him up tonight and end things early. This fight is a measuring stick for Rivas in that Hubeaux has previously faced contender Agit Kabayel (18-0, 13 KO's) and took some rounds in a decision loss.

Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Hubeaux's record of having lost only to Kabayel looks superficially impressive but if you look at those he beat (and who they beat and lost against), the numbers in Hubeaux's win column are more than a little flattering.
Don't take my word for it - check it out.

Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Clearly Hubeaux is no world beater. Thought he lost twice, btw...

You're right Oogie. He was once-beaten going into the Kabayel fight, not coming out of. I do tend to shoot from the hip rather than checking my facts. My excuse is that for most of my life, such facts were not at our fingertips.
And now of course it's three defeats. I don't think that came as a surprise to any regular "BoxReckers"![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

No sireee...I can't believe it wasn't on TV...the Jack/Stevenson fight was a real yawner.candyslim wrote: ↑20 May 2018, 05:02 You're right Oogie. Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
It wasn'T a great fight either... RIvas never really let his hands go and boxed safe for most of the fight... The body work was nice though.
It was on TV in UK and on PPV in Canada

Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Sounds like he may have been applying some training in the ring, I.E. body attack. I'm still sorry I missed it. Thanks Beast.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
IMO he was looking for the safe win to keep the ranking progression and take minimal damage. That is def what he achieved.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
I don't know if you'll be so thankful if you watched the whole fight. I only saw the last two rounds on You-tube and that was quite enough for me. It looked extremely disappointing ... or should I say Rivas did, since he was the guy I was expecting to see the fireworks from.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
I watched the whole thing unfortunately...Feel he needed a bit of a statement to put himself in the mix but seemed to just be transfixed on the body shots.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
The bit I saw just looked so pedestrian. I'd almost written him off as a prospective contender on account of his eye problems but I think now I've just almost written him off, full stop.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
I watched it all unfortunately....he needs a new trainer. He burnt himself out after 5 rounds looked exhausted. He was putting everything into his shots and unsurprisingly this devoured his stamina. It’s the same problem David Lemieux has and they have the same trainer...Marc ramsy. The Rivas that fought would be beaten by any of the top guys including Miller, who I think is top and even Breazeale...who is tough. I hope he can make some changes both in terms of his fighting style and team.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Anyone heard any rumours as to who he might face on 1st December? and the likelihood of him stepping up to a tougher challenge?
His entry to the WBC rankings and him being an ageing PBC guy had me pencil him in for a Wilder voluntary but the belt is going to be busy for a while now.

Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
I was thinking that. Spong would bring the WBC and WBO Latino Heavyweight Titles to put on the line, both ranked and both need a step up. Rivas has the NABF Heavyweight title but that wouldn't narrow down potential opponents at all.astradamus wrote: ↑05 Oct 2018, 07:26I hope Tyrone Spong, but I don't know.joshj909 wrote: ↑05 Oct 2018, 07:07 Anyone heard any rumours as to who he might face on 1st December? and the likelihood of him stepping up to a tougher challenge?

Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
I'd love to see Spong and Rivas fight but would it make sense for either to take such a tough and risky fight against someone who doesn't have a high ranking? I think Rivas is top 20 in one of the alphabet-orgs if I remember correctly, but that's about the extent of it.
I mean you can lose against a top guy and still climb the rankings if you put up a good show. Lose against Spong and some will say "He isn't even really a boxer" (despite his very impressive left hook).
It isn't like they are local and/or natural rivals either.

Spong: WBO-8, WBC-30
Also, i was thinking more of the regional factor, the Latin belts are similar to the European belts for that region and therefore doesn't require a direct rivalry.
Rivas being a PBO guy i think he might pick someone ranked on the edge or just below the WBC top 15 though at best

Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
I actually agree with you for once.astradamus wrote: ↑05 Oct 2018, 10:57I don't think either one got natural rivals, and the ones they do have would duck them both without thinking twice. They are both high risk relatively low reward.candyslim wrote: ↑05 Oct 2018, 09:02 I'd love to see Spong and Rivas fight but would it make sense for either to take such a tough and risky fight against someone who doesn't have a high ranking? I can't remember any boxer ever calling either of them out and I regularly see boxers pulling out of a fight against Tyrone Spong and wouldn't be surprised if boxers do the same with Rivas.
Too much risk absolutely no reward for their opponents.
I'd love to see them fight and see who moves up and who moves out
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Dear God is beating up Sergio Ramirez enough to get them both a world ranking these days ???candyslim wrote: ↑05 Oct 2018, 09:02 I'd love to see Spong and Rivas fight but would it make sense for either to take such a tough and risky fight against someone who doesn't have a high ranking? Rivas' best win was probably Herve Hubeaux whose claim to the big time is getting soundly beaten by Agit Kabayel in a European title fight.
I have to admit I'd lost sight of the South and Central America connection, but neither of my omissions/ inaccuracies affect my basic point that for Spong and Rivas to (sensibly) entertain the idea of fighting the other, there really ought to be a more meaningful prize - even if that's ranking position rather than a wearable trinket.
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
Translates as:
The clan of Oscar Rivas confirms that Ebenezer Tetteh has received an offer to face him on December 1st. The contracts are not signed, but it is his choice # 1.
This would be on the Stevenson/Gvozdyk card in Quebec.
Looks like he's cherrypicking an unproven fighter with a solid record (against bums) and a ranking (WBO 14).
Re: Oscar Rivas: Finally making a move?
He's now scheduled to face Tetteh on Boxrec
