Canelo v Saunders in September

Post by Taansend »

This would be great if it happened. Probably just part of the negotiating for Canelo GGG II but I'm back in Blighty in September so would be great to watch a big fight with my mates.

Even better if it happened at Wembley :box:

A man can dream.

As much as s Saunders has improved of late I see him getting a beatdown against Alvarez.

Saunders hasn't got a prayer of landing a stadium fight. He's just not popular enough.

I think they could get 50k out for a Canelo bout.

The money for a casino fight for a massive superstar of the game far outweighs anything any stadium can offer!

Not a chance in hell. His fight against Murray is selling fewer tickets than the Okolie fight at the same venue and he's been reduced to fighting for a world title in a literal leisure centre. He didn't even get 50k people watching him on tv last time he fought.

The point is entirely about Saunders selling out a stadium. Nothing to do with money so not sure what Mick's point is.

As I said - in terms of doing a big US fight obviously he could do it. Liam Smith has gone abroad and faced a massive name so no reason why Saunders can't. But Canelo coming here for a guy who sells as poorly as Saunders?

Remember - Calzaghe had been on domestic TV and was a massively we'll known and well regarded fighter post-Lacy and that fight was attended by 50,000. Saunders doesn't have anywhere near that backing even against as big a name as Canelo.

I’m agreeing. Canelo only boxed in a stadium against Smith because he really was unknown. Saunders is respected in America and we all know the serious fights take place in casinos in Vegas.

Respected by who, Mickey? Only the hard core will have heard of him.

Canelo sells out in the USA against anyone

This to be fair. Saunders has never fought in America and even in his own country (where he's an unbeaten world champion and boxing is in a boom period) he's a largely unpopular, low-selling, low-viewing figures fighter.

He may be broadly respected to an extent by a tiny minority but he's essentially completely unknown.

I didn’t think Smith sold out?

This is a myth. I was at the Canelo vs Khan fight just over two years ago and it was far from a sell-out.

This would be a very interesting matchup. I'd like to see it.

Should be a competitive bout, and a stiff test for both fighters.

Wasn't Canelo vs Saunders supposedly scheduled for December 2016 but Canelo withdrew with a thumb injury suffered in the Smith fight?

As I recall the fight would have been on HBO and not PPV because Saunders was basically an unknown fighter despite holding a belt.

At that time, Canelo would have been a prohibitive favorite.

I don't think it was scheduled. It was definitely a fight that was about to be made. Also, they would have stuck it on HBO PPV I think. If they can make Liam Smith a PPV, I don't see why not BJS. Smith only did 300k.

Canelo v Saunders would definitely sell the O2, not sure it would sell a UK stadium.

But it is certainly big enough for the O2 or MEN and would sell. Canelo is well known on these shores due to his fights v Mayweather, GGG and khan.

I wasn't sure if it was 100% scheduled or just probable.

I'm pretty certain that a December fight was definite for Canelo until the broken thumb was diagnosed.

You're right about Smith being an unknown also.

But I think that because his fight with Canelo was on the Mexican Independence Day weekend--a traditional date for major boxing events--the feeling was that it would sell on PPV.

Fans routinely turn to boxing on that date, even if the matchup isn't compelling.

But the Saunders fight would have been in December, a month when PPV buys usually aren't strong.

Maybe because fans are focused on saving up money for Christmas.

So combined with Saunders being a lightly regarded unknown in the US, my memory is that it would have been a regular HBO telecast.

I believe that there's no chance in hell that Canelo fights BJS in England.

If the fight happens, reserve a hotel room for Las Vegas.
