Fighters You Saw Debut Live

Post by Taansend »

Bit of a weird one here (I'm a bit of a weird one so...).

What boxers that went on to have decent careers did you see have their first pro fight?

I'm sure there is a shiteload of examples on here.

Off the top of my head I saw the great :D Henry Maske turn pro with a first minute KO of Antonio Arvizu on the same night (but not at the same venue) that saw Lennox Lewis win his 10th pro bout.

It was on a Wednesday too & you had The Lion (and Gary Jacobs and Errol Christie) on one bill while my man Kirkland Laing was winning the European title in some style across the city in Wembley.

Maske would go on to beat Prince Charles Williams for the IBF 175 title, make ten defences before losing in a unification bout with Virgil Hill.

starting in 1986

Steve Black - Heavyweight, http://boxrec.com/en/event/25888. I think Black went onto coach the Newcastle Falcons

1990 - Gerry ODowd - Middleweight, http://boxrec.com/en/event/50624. ODowd, brother of Boy George only had 1 fight, then had a very unfortunate event in his life (Google it)

1994 - Darren Corbett - Cruiserweight, http://boxrec.com/en/event/6192

1999 - Donovan Smillie - Middleweight, http://boxrec.com/en/event/8664

Off the top of my head i cant think of anymore but ill rack my brains and go thuogh other fights ive been to.

I wasn’t there as I was a bit too young, but Calzaghe debuted on the undercard of the Lewis-Bruno fight at Cardiff Arms Park, I imagine quite a few posters on here would have been there.

I remember eagerly awaiting it. ended up in a car accident that night. Smashed through a pub garden wall somewhere near Windsor.

Joseph Parker Vs Dean Gamonsway
Funnily enough, we knew Dean (cousin of the wife's workmate) and had not heard of Parker until the night, when I clicked he was the same Parker who won the Jr Olympic silver medal some years prior.

Saw Derry Matthews debut at Guild Hall Preston. I was wearing a training hat and whilst outside the hall I heard some scousers speculating that I was his opponent 😂

He looked about two weight classes bigger than his opponent and stopped him in the first round with a right to the body I think.

Same night Yuri Romanov floored Bobby Vanzie five times enroute to a stoppage win.

Good thread and I’d have put money on seeing some decent pro debuts but after going through some of the fights I’ve been too all I have is:

Anthony Small
Kerion Gray
Don broadhurst
Denton Vassell

And Amir Kahn’s Dad vs an advertising hoarding. Think the hoarding won by KO when it bounced back and hit him in the face and sparked him out.

Just went through the 10 or so cards I have been too, ranging from the bright lights of the MGM to the cold nights at the Kirkcaldy Ice Arena.

Only 2 I have seen are:

Josh Kelly on the Burns vs Indongo card.

Damon Jones (28th ranked LMW in the UK) on the Burns vs Moses card.
