Tyson was far from vintage that night & he missed more punches than he landed.

Francis never had any intention of coming to win & even sold the space on the soles of his boots to a popular newspaper to make some money from advertising.

Has anyone ever heard from another fighter, that Wlad or Vitali "hit them the hardest"?

I do believe I read that Wlad said this about his brother......perhaps in sparring......but I think you have to write that off.

There is someone running around the forum that I believe has stated more than once, that one of these brothers belongs in the "hardest hitting" catagory.

I'm not takin' a stand either way....but was wondering if there is any testimony from their various opponents on this subject.

chris byrd said wlad was really big puncher and hit way harder than vit.obv vit isnt even close. cant find much where opponents specifically askef about power, but some on wlad, imcluding nothrr interview with chris.

I've posted this before, but here's some info from a sparring partner (and former amateur opponent of Lewis and Bowe) who compares Wlad's power with Lewis's and Foreman's, amongst others.

Riddicks power wasnt memorable to me. It probably got better as he got older, cause he never even remotely buzzed me in either of our contests.

Lennox hit like a ****ing tank. He cowed me; I won the first round, and he literally broke my spirit and took my soul with a right uppercut and straight right hand in the 2nd. I tried to stay away, and forgot to punch. He never got me quite as good again, but I will never forget those two punches. When we sparred years later, he hit very hard. Distinctly unpleasant to be hit by the man.

David Tua was unpleasant. I can't see myself getting stopped by him early, as he never really staggers me, but every shot hurt, and he'd bang. Every other guy I ever sparred would box when I got aggressive, but David would stand his ground and give. I'd get these horrible headaches after sparring with him, and Dave told me once that whenever he knew I was on the dance card, he'd drink extra water for his brain. Nice guy. Hit like a wrecking ball. David Tua hit hard enough to knock my headgear clean around my face. Dude had a pretty limited style, but that left was quick as a cobra when he was sharp, and boy did it have bite. Having sparred them both, Wladimir would school Tua and probably turn out his lights. He just lacks almost any sort of refinement to his violence. Granted, I don't really either unless I'm really, really on that day, but the best heavyweights I've sparred handled me a lot easier than David did.

Feels kinda bad critiquing the dude, though. He's a fun guy, super hospitable and friendly, hit like a truck and put me through plenty of painful paces. I only hope our careers and lives don't end up with me required to face him with 12's and no mask. I can't afford the surgery.

Evander Holyfield was a machine gun. He put me on my butt first round we ever sparred with a 7 or 8 punch volley. He just punched well; He'd move around and when he let them go, they hit, hard and fast and in large numbers. He was the weakest of the group since Bowe, but probably the most dangerous. He never found me difficult to find, and turned me into a bobble head more than once.

George Foreman was tricky. His jab was absolutely numbing-Ive never felt a jab like that, where your whole face would feel like it got novacained after he hit you with it. He'd also throw light punches primarily, almost pitty pat, till he had the opening, and then he'd wallop you. His punches had the most force; They didn't hurt any worse than Tua or Lewis, but I remember how badly they'd screw with my balance. His shots moved me. He also broke my nose with a straight right.

Wladimir Klitschko hit me by far the hardest, though. I couldn't get past the jab, and his right hands hit like thunder. They reminded me of Lewis', but they were quicker and sharper. Wladimir staggered me regularly in sparring. There are literally whole rounds I don't remember. He also knocked me out with a left hook. Not down, out. Only time in my life I've seen canvas and not been able to stand up by 10 seconds."

I found this quote iin Joe Frazier's autobiography which may be of interest.
It concerns the first time that he went into the PAL (Police Athletic Gym) in Philadelphia to train for boxing in early January 1962.
Frazier had just turned 18 yrs old and weighed about 220 lbs.

It has to be said though that Bowe has improved so much from his amateurs days, that comparing amateur version of Bowe to the pro versions of Wlad, Lewis (he sparred with Lennox when Lennox was seasoned pro), Foreman, Tua is completely irrelevant, and this guy himself noted it too. I mean, amateur version of Riddick Bowe was knocked out by Adolpho Washington and was beaten badly by Jorge Luis Gonzalez, and we all saw what he did to Gonzalez in the pros.

True, and Lewis stayed amateur longer than Bowe so was probably older when Ford fought him.

Even so, in terms of pure power, I doubt Bowe hit as hard as Lewis or Wlad.

I don't know about that. His punches certainly had a greater affect on holyfield than anything Lennox landed. Though Lewis was a much smarter fighter, he had no intentions of engaging with evander. Wlad hits like a truck.

You may well be right there, shame that guy never got to make the comparison.

That's why I found that post so interesting. We all love to speculate, but it's great to get a definitive answer form someone who knows.

Ford also mentioned he knew a guy who was a sparring partner for Tyson just before that had to start paying people the big $$$ to take the job on. That guy confirmed that, while Tyson didn't necessarily hit as hard or harder than some of the other big punchers at HW, getting hit with 6 or 7 of Tyson's shots in a row was like nothing else he ever experienced.

“Laporte by a mile. He could punch, nearly took my head off. He hit me in the ninth round and, when I was a kid, I lived in the diamond in Clones. My mum and dad had a grocery business. My (now) wife’s family owned a hardware store, a beautiful little town of 3,000 people. There was also a toy shop owned by Mrs Keenan. He hit me and I’m coming forward and throwing the jab and, in the 10th, I stepped in and his head went back, so I thought, “I’ll try it again.” As I came forward I saw red. It was his right hand coming at me; he beat me to the punch. I didn’t know where I was. I thought I was in Mrs Keenan’s shop. That’s the God’s honest truth; I thought, “What am I doing in Mrs Keenan’s shop?” That’s how much he hurt me. I grabbed a hold of him. I don’t know how I cleared my head. (Referee) Harry Gibbs was going, “Break, you’re holding.” I could hear this noise but I held on and then eventually he broke us up. He swung a few more shots and I managed to get myself together and got to the end of the round. That was the hardest I’ve been hit. It was the most bizarre feeling. It took me back to my childhood. Mugabi and Tony Sibson: I remember seeing Tony Sibson at the weigh-in. This guy was strong. I remember when he hit me on the chest, he looked much stronger and bigger than me, and he’s supposed to be a middleweight. Mugabi, I believe he put on more weight before the fight. I could feel his body against me. He felt like a light heavyweight, he didn’t feel like a middleweight. When he threw punches, they were all deadly, very hard punches. This guy felt like a light heavyweight to me, so I had to wear him down, to take away some of that strength.

John Mugabi and Hearns: Because they came to fight. They came to take my title from me. Mugabi hit me with an uppercut. It didn’t hurt, but it was a hard punch, and I learned something from that. I had to regroup and come up with a different strategy. Also, with Tommy Hearns, he hit me with one good right hand, a good shot. I knew then that was his hardest punch, and I wanted more. I got more aggressive. I realized I had to keep the pressure on him, make him move and make him throw that right hand so he would leave an opening for me.
