Michael Spinks at the Cruiserweights

Post by DrDuke »

What could have been for Michael Spinks, if in 1985 after defending his light heavyweight championship he would have moved to the Cruiserweights first? There were De Leon, Ratliff and Qawi, of course, not forgetting about rising Holyfield. How could Spinks show up against then top Cruisers, could he be an undisputed champion there as well? How could the Cruiserweight run affect Michael's career?

So, I guess, Spinks could have a very good run at the cruiserweights. I'd say, he was capable of defeating everybody there, including Qawi, the second win would probably be more decisive. Holyfield could have turned out to be an exception though, he could have won Spinks. Evander didn't have much experience for that moment, but he had still already been real deal. He was able to handle Qawi, which probably could mean, that he at least could provide a solid counteraction to Spinks. Michael had to be very busy in this fight. I actually give Holyfield a slight advantage.

If Spinks would have lost to Holyfield, that could have made him to finish the career just like he had actually done after Tyson loss. Anyway he could chose to try a heavyweight run, maybe just to finish the career with couple of better paid bouts. And I don't see any better outcome of possible Tyson fight, if it took place after the possible cleaning up the cruiserweights including winning Holyfield. However, it depends on time. If Spinks' cruiserweight run would be long enough, up to Tyson firing Rooney, Spinks' chances against Mike would have increased significantly, I'd say.
