Just by some chance, this wouldn't be Tod Morgan, would it?

It fits into his schedule and location, and he DID go by Bert Morgan early on.

Nope! The Los Angeles Times clearly knew who Tod Morgan was. So, on June 24, 1923, it mentioned that Bert Morgan of northern California was in town. It mentioned his record was 23 KOs in 32 bouts.
