Billy Joe Saunders closes in on London superfight with Gennady Golovkin!

Post by Enlightened-One »

"Billy Joe Saunders closes in on London superfight with Gennady Golovkin following apparent collapse of Kazakh's rematch with Canelo Alvarez" (Source: Jeff Powell for the Mail Online)

Billy Joe Saunders is closing on a London superfight with Gennady Golovkin following the apparent collapse of Triple G's rematch with Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo's Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya has announced the opening of negotiations for Daniel Jacobs to replace Golovkin in Las Vegas on September 15.

That clears the way for a world middleweight title unification fight between Golovkin and Saunders, who had withdrawn injured from this month's defence of his WBO belt against Martin Murray.

Golovkin, the WBC, WBA, IBF and IBO champion, has long coveted Saunders title, which would complete his set. The Kazakh puncher would have no qualms about returning to London, where he knocked out Kell Brook.

The only complication is the pressure on Golovkin to fulfill a mandatory defences of his IBF title. But Saunders in the UK offers a much bigger pay day.

Billy Joe's potential good fortune comes with disappointment for the world boxing audience who have been itching for a repeat of the controversial first fight between Canelo and Triple G.

But De La Hoya has told ESPN: 'The Canelo train has left the station.' That comes after months of haggling over the purse split since the May postponement of the rematch after Alvarez was briefly suspended for two positive drugs tests in February.

Golovkin has been demanding compensation by way of an improvement in his mega millions percentage from 65-35 to 50-50.

'No way that's happening,' says De La Hoya.

Not that negotiations will be a cake walk for Jacobs, who is the first big name signed by Anthony Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn for his new US stable.

Hearn is also deep in talks for AJ to meet America''s WBC world heavyweight champion in a huge title unifier.

Nor will fighting Jacobs mollify the millions of fans suspecting that Canelo is ducking a rematch with Golovkin who was robbed of victory by the Vegas judges in their first fight.

The London Stadium is a possible venue for Saunders v Golovkin. Perhaps as early as August.

Thoughts?

Take the money or fulfill mandatory obligations.

Quite a dilemma for Golovkin.

And would he come to the UK to face Saunders? Is there more money and less risk in traveling to Japan to oppose Murata.

Is he interested in unifying but at the same time being stripped for not facing Derevyanchenko and/or Charlo?

Does he care to negotiate with Warren and Saunders? Those guys would make Canelo/Oscar seem like pussycats.

And are negotiations with Canelo really over or just on a brief time out?

Golovkin should be paid really good for that. If he won't, why would he lose a one of the titles for that? He didn't back up in Canelo negotiations, he won't do it here. This match-up doesn't sound possible for the moment.

It sucks to be Martin Murray that's the first thought.
Canelo is a fraud, and will have an asterisk next to his name indefinitely. One only a true asshole can excuse or dismiss.
Golovkin should have just taken the millions he was gonna get and beat Canelo, again. But I imagine GBP could always find an excuse to tuck tail and run if they wanted, so all Golovkin's demand for parity did was make it easier. Canelo ran in the ring and apparently never stopped, a year later still on his bike. Greed goes a long way at GBP when it comes to their only source of income.. all this hoopla for a damn cheating rat, quite disgraceful to defend that guy. Hiding behind the numbers doesn't validate this cheat's position. He is a spoiled rotten scumbag, in reality deserves nothing but trouble. Glad he's got it. The sooner Canelo gets KTFO, the better it is for boxing.

I think top boxers including Golovkin should boycott BJS for his repeated disrespect to his potential opponents. WBO needs to have him fight their #1 (Andrade) or strip him.

Golovkin can fight his mandatories, Derevo and then Charlo.

I have a hunch that if Golovkin decides to abandon some of his titles and go into full money grubbing mode, come next Cinco de Mayo he'll be begging GBP for that 65/35 split.

He could get spanked by the wily Saunders for a lot less.

No, Canelo will never get Golovkin for 35%.

Yes, it must be difficult to be in Murray's shoes right now. Even more difficult than to be in the shoes of a Canelo Alvarez fan.

The risk of blindness from keep having to turn a blind eye must be considerable bigger for Canelo fans than those of Sergio Ramos. With Ramos there is a still a minuscule element of doubt for anyone but a Liverpool or Egypt fan.

We've talked about this before, Demetrius Andrade is not interested in facing Billy Joe Saunders, since he made the following claims in January:

"Demetrius Andrade doesn’t want to face Billy Joe Saunders… just yet!"

To paraphrase some of the key points that Demetrius Andrade articulated in this video:

• “Before the Lemieux fight, Billy Joe was willing to get into the ring with me and I told him to handle what he’s got to handle… and Lemieux is easy if you’re six feet and you know how to box, know how to move, it’s a walk in the park.”

• “HBO offered me Lemieux and I said I’d fight him two times… and [Team Lemieux] said they won’t take the fight due to high risk-low reward…”

• “I know that Billy Joe Saunders would fight me. I think he’s a confident guy that’s willing to get into the ring and put whatever he got on the line…”

• “[Would I like to fight Saunders next?]… No! I’d like to fight one more fighter at 160lbs and then fight him…”

• “[Fighting Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan] would be a good step-up fight for me as far as weight. I still believe I need to put on a little bit more muscle, put a little bit more weight on, so I can hang with the long distance, the smothering, the holding, [because] that shít takes a toll on people.”

• “Saunders has some good boxing ability and some good footwork. Saunders is a big dude. So what I’m saying is for me to be able to beat down a big dude, I think I need to put on a little more weight the proper way.”

• “You can tell Saunders is a big guy…”

"BILLY JOE SAUNDERS NEXT, NO. IM HAPPY TO FIGHT THE GUY W/ THE MOUSTACHE! (SPIKE) - DEMETRIUS ANDRADE"

For the record, at some point or other, Canelo, Golovkin, Lemieux and Eubank Jr. have all previously declined guaranteed opportunities to face Saunders, with the Brit having already accepted the terms proposed to him, whilst others, such as Avtandil Khurtsidze, have actually preferred to take step-aside money rather than face him.

And it seems that Demetrius Andrade is another fighter that isn't tempted to engage in a bout against the trash-talking Brit... at least not just yet! :yay:

This would be a unification bout so doesn’t that normally override mandatories?

If Andrade doesn't want BJS, then Jacobs is next in line.

So does this mean that BJS faked "injury" to get out of the Murray fight?

This would definitely be a more lucrative fight in the U.K., and a much more exciting fight than BJS vs Murray which was a guaranteed Saunders decision win from the moment it was announced.

This is a legitimately intriguing bout.

Don't you find it strange that his "injuries" happen when it becomes clear that Golovkin won't fight Canelo ?

Doesn't seem like Andrade wants a part of anyone. He's innactive and practically retired. Huge disappointment for me, I hope someday that he proves me wrong.
