Winky Wright Inducted into International Hall of Fame

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

"Wright on," as superbly talented defensive fighter Ronald "Winky" Wright, who was the first man to hold the WBC, WBA and IBF super welter titles simultaneously, will this weekend be inducted into the International Hall of Fame, at Canastota, NY.

"Winky" will forever be remembered for his victories over "Sugar" Shane Mosley (twice) and Felix "Tito" Trinidad. Born on November 26, 1971, he debuted as pro in 1990, building a great career until his retirement in 2012, after being defeated by Peter Quillin.

"Winky", who was also NABF champion, reached the crowning zenith of his career in 2004, when he defeated Shane Mosley in a fabulous fight, winning the WBC super welterweight title. In the rematch, the tonic of the combat was of a rare plus fine vintage, with Winky again mixing it up to win.

Ronald "Winky" Wright, always a brave, elusive intelligent fighter with a huge heart. His induction into the International Hall of Fame is fully deserved. It's the culmination of a brilliant career.

Congratulations Winky!

This would speak of the decline of quality fighters more than anything else. I enjoyed Winky;s well executed fighting style but he is no hall of famer IMHO

If you can keep a place in the P4P top 10 for a few years then you will probably get in the Hall of Fame.

So he’s got in first ballot, then? I remember reading that this was going to be a tough year so he’s done well I guess Klitschko and Morales were the others to make it?

If Arturo Gatti can get in, so can Winky, who was much better.

if you use gattis level as a fighter as the standard then theres a shitload more ppl who could be in, personally i dont use the worst guy as the metric , i think thats stupid and just a way to lower things. and gatti its more about his massively entertaining and memorable fights imo...he was defo an atg in that respect i feel

winky to me is a super bland induction and probably on the weaker side although i dont really take much issue with it, vitali is the most undeserving of the most recent group

Winky Wright became a first ballot hall of famer when he was inducted into the IBHOF on December 2017.

And by the way, he does deserve to be in the hall of fame. At his peak, he was rated #2 p4p. He dominated Shane Mosley twice and dominated Felix Trinidad. His key wins are better than that of Alvarez, Golovkin, Lomachenko, Crawford, Rigondeaux, or Kovalev. It is a fact, whether you agree with it or whether it sends you into a butthurt tantrum because you've put marginally accomplished fighters on a pedestal because you lack historical perspective.

ya but his wins cant top tom schwarzs though

btw im not sure how high his win over trinidad should be rated, he fought tito 4 years after hop stopped him, think the name makes it seem a better win then it was

Totally deserving unless you want the HOF to be a hell of a lot more exclusive than it actually is.

In the year 2030, you're still going to be bitching about the first argument that you had on boxrec, and no one else is going to have any idea what you're talking about. How is it that you can be so butthurt over an argument that several months later you're still turning-up in Winky Wright threads to say "my ass is still bleeding from the neverending butthurt. It has still not healed." I get that you're the most petty 19-year-old on Earth; but the fact that you can't compartmentalize separate subjects, and you have to be like "Hey everybody, everybody! Listen up! Lackeos victimized me by disagreeing with me about Tom Schwarz 6 months ago! I'll never forget it! Somebody call the police, because I'm still not okay! I know this is a Winky Wright thread, but I need everybody to be reminded of the injustice that was done against me when Lackeos disagreed with me!" No one else on this forum acts like that; because we aren't petty bitches. Man up. Heal your anus. You're not going to ever have anybody's respect if you act like that much of a fragile, grudge-bearing victim. You think anybody else on this forum is still butthurt over the first time someone disagreed with them? Like, how are you going to get respect when everybody can see you acting like a stalker?

He absolutely deserves to be in the HOF: I can't believe some people would think otherwise.

You don't only have to be the greatest of the great to be in there, otherwise there'd only be Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Henry Armstrong, Roberto Duran & probably Sam Langford in it & that's it.

Wright was a good fighter with some great accomplishments.

He took his lumps & never disrespected the sport; why would you deny someone like that some recognition?

How can anyone object?

At his best, Winky best a host of outstanding fighters.

His domination of Trinidad was beautiful. Finished the job that De La Hoya was only able to do for 9 rounds.

Was arguably robbed against a rising Fernando Vargas.

A great choice for any HOF.

I think the objections mainly come from those who didn't appreciate his style.

A thinker. Not a bludgeoner.

^ Agreed. He was also arguably robbed against Jermain Taylor and Hopkins. The Hopkins fight was sort of close though if i remember.

wasnt robbed vs hopkins or vargas, hes one of those guys who ppl love calling robbery for though, bit like glen johnson

pretty sure there was a big split of scores both ways vs taylor too, i can easily see a draw when you go round by round
