World Cup Boxers

Post by Taansend »

OK, I'm trying to keep occupied so I don't down a load of booze* so here's the best of each country at the World Cup by group.

Feel free to correct me. I know I'll have missed loads of obvious ones out. Although in many cases I just chose blokes I liked.

Group A
Russia - Dmitry Pirog. Maybe not the best resume of all Russians but he did better than Golovkin in regards to Jacobs :OhYes:
Saudi Arabia - Zuhayr Al Qahtani. 3-0 Welter based in Mitcham. Best Saudi boxer EVER!
Egypt - Kabary Salem. 23-5 Egyptian who was the best Egyptian to fight Calzaghe, Veit & Bute.
Uruguay - Alfredo Evangelista. 61-13-4 and the last foreigner (he was based in Spain) to lose to Muhammad Ali :D

Group B
Portugal - Jose Santa. 69-20-4. Giant of a man with a big punch who lost to Max Baer & Primo Carnera.
Spain - Jose Duran. 64-6-9. Light Middle Champ of the 70's.
Morocco - Khalid Rahilou - 37-5. 140lb champ from turn of the recent century who beat a host of good fighters including Frankie Randall.
Iran - Mahyar Monshipour. 31-4-2. French based nutter who was in a couple of fights of the year while winning the 122 title a decade ago.

Group C
France - Georges Carpentier. 91-14-6. Best European fighter in my humble opinion.
Australia - Jeff Fenech. 29-3-1. Best Aussie born fighter by a country mile. Ok, well Jimmy was a close 2nd.
Peru - Mauro Mina. 52-3-3. LH from the 60's who beat Eddie Cotton and Battling Siki. Not that Battling Siki though
Denmark - Battling Nelson. 59-19-22. You could argue for a few more modern boxers who actually fought in Denmark but I'm a stickler for the oldies.

Group D
Argentina - Niccolino Locche. 117-4-14. Most would say Carlos but watch the highlights of this bloke. Uncanny skills.
Iceland - Gunnar Kolbeinn Kristinsson, currently 10-0
Croatia - Mate Parlov. 24-3-2. He beat John Conteh :verysad:
Nigeria - Dick Tiger. 60-19-3. It could have been Ike but it's Dick. First man to beat Terry Downes & an all time great

Group E
Brazil - Eder Jofre. 72-2-4. Maybe one of the top 20 of all time. Only lost to one man, both away, in a 20 year career. Two weight champ.
Switzerland - Frank Erne. 31-6-16. A great from the late 1800s.
Costa Rica - Bryan Vasquez. 36-3. Recently went the distance with Beltran.
Serbia - Slobodan Kacar. 22-2. Decent 175lber from the 80's.

Group F
Germany - Max Schmeling. 56-10-4. Beater of legends, saviour of Jews, ruined a million German teeth :OhYes:
Mexico - :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Sweden - Ingemar Johansson. 26-2. Ingo's Bingo. Only lost to Paterson but was out on his feet in his final victory.
South Korea - Myung Woo Yuh. 38-1. Long time Light Fly Champ who beat every man he ever fought.

Group G
Belgium - Jean Pierre Coopman. 36-16-2. Maybe not the best but any man who drinks Champagne BETWEEN ROUNDS while challenging Muhammad Ali for the title deserves all the accolades he gets :OhYes:
Panama - Roberto Duran. 103-16. Duran never drew.
Tunisia - Kamel Bou-Ali. 45-5-3. Beat the legendary Manc Joey Jacobs for the WBO 130 title. Jacobs beat Sugar Gibiliru. True story.
England - Jack 'Kid' Berg. 157-26-9. I don't care what you think :OhYes:

Group H
Poland - Dariusz Michalczewski. 48-2. Roy Jones ducked him, innit
Senegal - Battling Siki. 60-24-4. Beat Carpentier then was 'kidnapped' & taken to Ireland to fight Mike McTigue on St Patricks Day during the height of the 20's uprising. Liked a drink & got shot to death in New York.
Colombia - Antonio Cervantes. 91-12-3. Fantastic fighter who was the only man to stop the excellent Locche.
Japan - Fighting Harada. 55-7. Proper warrior who fought a who's who at Bantam & Feather in the swinging sixties.

* - halfway through doing this my Missus came home & the car is f*cked again. So on top of going home for a funeral & missing ten days of work (unpaid) I also have to find the money for a car repair. So yes, I am drinking now.

Anyone called Dick Tiger gets my vote.
I bet he introduces himself like James Bond
"Hello, my name is Tiger, Dick Tiger"

Question is, when he dies, will the Chinese grind him into a powder in a hope to cure erectile dysfunction?

Australia- agree with Jeff Fenech. Totally robbed against Nelson. Came back and set it straight. Boxrec says different, but I agree with your choice :TU:
New Zealand- David Tua for now.

Why Pedro?
Massively popular in Spain, THAT unbeaten run, solid European champion, got robbed of the world title...

It's close but I'd edge it to Pedro
