Female fighters

Post by jpspice »

I will admit that generally I don't pay much attention to Women's boxing. I haven't found it to be as exciting as watching the men. But, I think that may be changing. I've checked out a few lately and it looks to me that the women fighters are getting way better! Eva Whalstrom can really throw, and good combinations. Does anyone else see vast improvement in women's boxing and do you know if there is a page on boxrec (like the champions page for men) for the women title holders?

Honorable Mention to Lucia Riker who I thought was awesome.

just not enough power for me to be interested, even a big fighter like shields hasnt even scored 1 knockdown, the quality is low overall but there are some good women

katie taylor and jessica bopp (p4p #1 ass too) for example. theyve got a decent womens scene in mexico too

I don't know about the chicks.
You can go as far back as Christy Martin who got quite a bit of hype and was a good fighter, but they took forever to get a big bout for her.
Eventually she fought Laila Ali but they missed their window when the fight was really hot, they waited and decided to spend the extra time building it up when they should have struck.
Today we have Clarissa Shields, I saw her on the Kovalev v Ward 1 undercard and it went right off it was a good fight.
Eddie Hearn has been pushing Katie Taylor.
It's tough because we have enough on our plate as fans following most of the divisions.
In order to get people interested you first have to have a number of female boxers who compete around the same weight.
If you spread the hype of some of these women all over the place people are just going to get confused because with the already demanding effort it takes to watch men boxing will be too much.
If someone comes along and says look at this chick who a Cruiserweight, Middleweight and Featherweight with no comparisons to go on likely won't go well.
Get a group 4-5-6 within a weight class or two that are prepared to move up or down depending on the circumstances would be a good start.

I only keep close track on Mexican star Mariana "La Barbie" Juarez when it comes to women's boxing.

Her photo spread in Playboy some years back made me a huge fan.

I'm not a fan of female fights. I remember, I watched the bout of Ali's and Frazier's daughters, some fights of Holly Holm (the most remembered one is when she got KTFO), some fights of Natascha Ragosina, some of Serrano, something else probably I don't remember. I actually watched more MMA female fights, cause they are promoted good in the UFC and it was impossible not to watch them, so to speak. However, I'm not a big fan of MMA also, I haven't watched it at all recently, so for example, I even didn't watch Cyborg-Holm fight.

It's all good if you ask me. It's a shame Nicola Adams didn't turn pro earlier as she's getting on already.

I do remember Barry McGuigan being really anti it when it took off in the UK. Different story now though as he's plugging his fighter as competition for KT

Can’t stand watching holm. Loved what she did to rousey but after that’s she’s been in terrible performances. So stiff, so telegraphed, very hard to watch imo.

I watched only Tate and Shevchenko fights after her Rousey fight. Well, yeah, they weren't much fun to watch. But Rousey fight was enjoyable indeed even considering the fact I don't like female fights in general.

I've attended many Layla McCarter fights. Love it! It's like going to a rock concert.

When they first started years ago I was against it. I was a R/J at the 1st women's world amateur championships in '01. I was impressed with the skill level and technique but they did not have power. I now coach abut 8 women along with my male boxers. They are fun to coach and motivated. I have been a coach for US teams in international events and had 2 who made the 2016 US Olympic team. They have developed power now compared to back in '01. They will keep getting better as they get more experience.
For those who say women belong in the house, piss off to Saudi Arabia.

I don't get why so many are dead set against it. You may not like it, sure, that's ok but I've heard insulting things about women's boxing.

I'm not into it just because the skills simply ain't there in comparison to the men. The power ain't either.

The gap is wide enough in skill that if you match Claressa Shields (Middleweight or Super Middleweight woman) with a Top 30 ranked Featherweight Man, and she gets her ass kicked easily.

And I might be generous by saying it would take Top 30. Maybe Top 100.

That's true with any sport though. That's true with tennis yet Serena Williams is respected across the board.

I'm not talking about people simply not liking it. I'm talking about people saying that they women shouldn't box, or saying they aren't good for anything except looking good. That's where MMA has one upped boxing because they took one of the best female boxers, Holly Holm and made her a headliner and respected in UFC.

Oh. Well yeah in that case I wouldn't be one of the people that says they shouldn't Box. I'm all for equal opportunity, and equality so if the ladies wanna Box, let 'em box.

I just hope we don't ever see Intergender Boxing matches because that won't end well.

Lucia Rjiker and Katie Taylor were the only two I've ever watched that looked to have good skills. Then again, I haven't watched much. And probably won't.

Nice to hear your observations. I did a bit of support training in a gym here. Had the honor to work with a great female fighter who is a good friend of Claressa Shields. She can really throw some sweet combinations, perhaps the most skilled fighter in the gym! I think this fight between Gabriels and Shields won't be lacking much of anything the men have.
