Paul smith jnr has retired

Post by chiggsy »

A truly sad day for british boxing.

He’ll surely be considered one of the greatest british fighters to never win a world title along side herol bomber graham.

Was unlucky in 2 well derseved world title shots and andre ward admitted himself that paul would have beaten him easily if he got the weight right that night.

Outstanding talent, one of the best, absolute fitness fanatic and machine inside the ring, best of the boxing brothers by far,
will be missed.
We should thank our lucky stars that we can still hear him commentate on boxing.
All the best  :TU:

A modern Sam Langford.

In seriousness, he had a decent career, better than most could dream of, not everyone can get to the top.

A sad day indeed. I heard Eddie was working on getting him a shot at the winner of the cruiser super series. I’ve missed his light hearted banter in here! Never before has a P4P’er been so accessible to his fans.

Paul Smith

Arthur Abraham I - (Lost)
Arthur Abraham II - (Lost)
Tony Quigley
Tony Dodson I
Tony Dodson II
Paul Samuels
David Banks
Cello Renda
Steven Bendall - (Lost)
Andre Ward - (Lost)

Strange time to retire with Fielding getting a world title shot. If Fielding wins then Paul Smith would be one of the most obvious first opponents for him.

As for his career; the highlights were getting beat by Abraham twice. His best wins were basically high English title level/low British title level.

I share the despair of my fellow posters - the ultimate professional, as evidenced by his preparation for the showdown with Ward. Discipline, dedication and if that wasn't enough a willingness to engage with fans and listen to their opinions :TU:

In that fight I was seeing things in my head that my body just couldn't do and I felt my age in there. That fight wouldn't have been a problem for me a year earlier.”

The guy did the best he could with the tools he had and the vast majority of boxers would be very pleased to have had a similar career.

Classic forum moment when he told us all we knew nothing and that kid said “I beat you twice!”! Then they had a reunion on here.

Coming in 4.4lbs over in a catchweight contest and looking more like a sumo than a boxer is not making the best of the tools you have.

True enough bout I think it's the fact that he thought he was a lot better than he was that rubbed folk up the wrong way. He had an arrogance about him that people didn't warm to. Plus he came in well overweight in a contest so that's not making the best of his situation IMO.
