My humble opinion is that a heavyweight doesn't need to punch his weight as long as he can compensate with boxing skill, good defense, a solid jab, combination punching ability, and mobility.

Just my two cents. Maybe I'm wrong.

Bugner throws discus at the English Schools championships in Hendon in July 1964. He is just 14 years of age, a giant of a lad.

Here's the Bugner-Ellis weigh-in, courtesy of AP. It's a 40 second video.

In my collection I have all of Sid Nathan's scorecards.

Sid did not referee Bugner that often. He was tiny fella and most of Bugner's big UK contests were handled by Harry Gibbs, who was about as big as Bugner himself.

The one major bout Sid did referee was Bugner v Ellis.

Although it was a 'shutout' as has been referred to by another poster, there were two even rounds.

This is Sid's card.

Fascinating. Thanks for that info, Miles.

As for Nathan's card, I'm surprised he didn't Bugner an extra 1/2 point for flooring Ellis in round ten. That's how it works in America: a guy gets the equivalent of an extra round on the scorecards for each knockdown he scores.

They do now. Rules were different in 1974.
