Alex Arthur vs Michael Gomez

Post by TheLeprechaun »

This is my favourite fight to rewatch and best British fight I've watched live. The atmosphere was unbelievable. The build up to this fight was great. Most gave Gomez no chance. Gomez came in like a man possessed and tried to bomb Arthur out within 30 seconds. You could heat a pin drop in the audience. Ian Darke and McCrory had their best night of commentary. The sheer excitement and love of the sport was a joy to hear from Darke.

Topsy turvy fight which really had everything. Both guys hurt, both guys showing massive heart, big conclusive KO at the end. Arthur was completely done after this fight. Even though Arthur lost, it was an amazing show of heart.

I think this is a very underrated British fight. It was an absolute classic

I dunno if I’d call it underrated, pretty much everyone who’s seen it agrees it was brilliant. But yeah, one of those fights you can just watch over and over and it never stops being great fun. It’s got to be up there as one of the best British fights on Sky, along with Moore vs Macklin and a few others.

That was the end of Arthur's career as the golden boy that's for sure.

He was proper bashed up in that fight. the last knockdown wasn't needed in my opinion.

Just tonight I was clearing out some old DVDs and I found one I labelled Fun UK fights. AA v Gomez was on there and so was Macklin v Moore as well as Cello Renda v Paul Samuels and The Cat v Sebastian Rothmann. None of those will get boring no matter how many times you watch them.

That DVD is definitely being saved to hard drive.

Arthur was very intimidated by Gomez and in my opinion fought scared. Although a great fight I think if Arthur had been prepared better he could of won that fight easily

The first 30 seconds of the fight was definitely the time when Arthur realized he couldn't afford to f*ck around. Arthur had a very good second round but just couldn't keep Gomez off in the third. I think Arthur looked open to left hooks in previous fights. He just couldn't block a left hook in the fight and Gomez kept throwing the punch and eventually Gomez started leaping in with it to get maximum power when he realized it was landing cleanly.

Watched this in Aiya Napa on an all inclusive.

I remember buying some exctasy from a charming gentleman from Glasgow who wore a 1980s CR Smith Rangers top

Cut a long story short. Needless to say, I had the last laugh

Also I once saw Michael Gonez being carried out, unconsciously pissed, from A pub in Worsley, 3 days before a fight.

On the commentary Ian Darke mentioned that Michael Brodie v Injin Chi was the previous week. Another classic.

One of the great fights of yesteryear. Arthur was the golden boy, but he was founf out by Gomez. He had the offence, very skilled in that area, but his defence was sh*t and all it took was a scrapper like Gomez who had the heart to walk through Arthurs shots, rough him up and bang the left hook home all night.

Arthur showed the heart of a loin that night, he took so much punishment its anazing thr fight lasted as long as it did. He was never the same after that night.
