I read this some years ago (and hope my memory serves me well) and maybe someone here can vouch for its validity or debunk it...

Liston was having drinks in London at a table that included Reg Gutteridge (TV commentator). The subject of race came up and Liston posed the question as to why racists call black people monkeys when white people generally have a lot more hair on their bodies than black people.

Quick as a flash Reg makes a bet that Sonny's got more hair on his leg than Reg has. Sonny takes the bet and rolls his trouser leg up. Sure enough there are very few hairs on there. The other people at the table want to see Reg's leg. he dutifully rolls it up to reveal a completely smooth false leg. Sonny had no idea about Reg's leg and paid up the bet. Despite trying to be affable Liston was apparently not that impressed with Reg's little joke.

This story is in Reg's autobiography. So unless Mr.Gutteridge is a liar, it's true.

May have already posted this somewhere

It was Frank Bruno being interviewed on The Sports Personality of The Year Show by Des Lynham just after he had beaten another no name ( in this case, I think, Chuck Gardener )

Des: So Frank, who will you be fighting next time?

FB: Huh Huh, I dunno Des. I could be you, know what I mean?

Des: Judging by your last few opponents, it probably will be

camera pans to Sue Barker talking about tobogganing

Reg also says that the joke went down well, after some initial reluctance and he and Sonny would laugh about it on several occassions.

Promoter Bob Arum after someone claimed he had said something that contradicted what he had said the day before. "Yesterday I was lying, today I'm telling the truth".

Mike Tyson

I'm pretty sure this is legit. I think it was in Sports Illustrated. A reporter was interviewing Mike Tyson and asked him "So Mike they have you fighting every two weeks?" Mike, "No, just twice a month."

This past Saturday after his fight with Byrd, Wladimir Klitschko was asked if he could prove the critics wrong about his supposed weak chin. He answered "I would like to prove I have a good chin but I would rather knock my opponent out."

Rocchigiani to Michalczevski before their second fight:

"There are smart Poles and stupid Germans, but you are a stupid Pole. With you I cannot discuss".

After the fight:

'You are still a stupid Pole, but today you've boxed well."

--------------------------

Rocchigiani before the first Maske fight (R is from West Berlin, M from East Berlin):

"I consider this bout as the fight East agasint West. After all this is what it is all about: punch the West German in the kisser, punch the East German in the kisser".

During the Klitschko/Byrd fight, Chris would frequently shake his head and grin when he would get hit by Klitschko. One of the announcers said "Skhaking your head doesn't keep the punches from scoring."

You know that sums up the current HW group, everybody wants to be champ but no one wants to really put in a serious effort.

Mike Tyson when asked by a reporter, whether Bruno's size (who was coming in at his heaviest weight ever) for the rematch would be too much; Mike said, "Ain't no problem, just more of him to hit!" :o

Ali, of course

Post by tagjohnson »

When asked by Howard Cosell about some of his less than stellar opposition during his first couple of years as heavyweight champ, Ali said, (and I saw this myself BTW) "I want to give fighters from different countries a chance at the title; Canada, Germany, London."
