Mitch Green , once a bright prospect.
Dokes wasn't that much better from a technical standpoint, but the whole Tyson thing does hype him up somewhat, but he was a prospect at the time of his pro debut, his amateur career was sucessful.silkov wrote:...Page, Tillis, Williams and Tubbs and Dokes were all faster and much better all round boxers... Dokes was a hell of a lot better than Green... come on man, calling Green one of the fastest heavies in history is just ludicous....Nile4000 wrote:Dokes wasn't that much better from a technical standpoint, but the whole Tyson thing does hype him up somewhat, but he was a prospect at the time of his pro debut, his amateur career was sucessful.silkov wrote:...Page, Tillis, Williams and Tubbs and Dokes were all faster and much better all round boxers... Seriously, Green had very good speed early in his career.I've seen a couple of his fights.Man was fast, maybe not in the elite but not at the bottom, it was definitely comparabe to Williams.silkov wrote:Dokes was a hell of a lot better than Green... come on man, calling Green one of the fastest heavies in history is just ludicous....Nile4000 wrote:Dokes wasn't that much better from a technical standpoint, but the whole Tyson thing does hype him up somewhat, but he was a prospect at the time of his pro debut, his amateur career was sucessful.silkov wrote: ...Page, Tillis, Williams and Tubbs and Dokes were all faster and much better all round boxers... I have a number of of fights too... he had good mobility, but nothing special really, I've seen many faster boxers of that era who were better all round fighters too such as Tillis, Page, Thomas, and Williams etc... Greens best weapon was his jab and he used his height well... not much of a puncher and his hands were pretty slow for world class... good boxer but not world class as a pro...Nile4000 wrote:Seriously, Green had very good speed early in his career.I've seen a couple of his fights.Man was fast, maybe not in the elite but not at the bottom, it was definitely comparabe to Williams.silkov wrote:Dokes was a hell of a lot better than Green... come on man, calling Green one of the fastest heavies in history is just ludicous....Nile4000 wrote: Dokes wasn't that much better from a technical standpoint, but the whole Tyson thing does hype him up somewhat, but he was a prospect at the time of his pro debut, his amateur career was sucessful.
I could definitely see him beating a James Broad, or Tex Cobb. If he didn't have all those early problems as a pro, I think he would a Tillis or Snipes hell too.Tillis was more advanced skill wise, but I think Mitch could give him a fight.silkov wrote:I have a number of of fights too... he had good mobility, but nothing special really, I've seen many faster boxers of that era who were better all round fighters too such as Tillis, Page, Thomas, and Williams etc... Is this the same Mike Williams that would not come out of his dressing room to fight Tommy Morrison. Therefore, prompting the announcer to ask members of the audience if there was a licenced heavyweight in attendence willing to get in the ring with Morrison?Nile4000 wrote:Don't know, he sparred with Mike Tyson and reportedly got the best of him.ebeneezer wrote:Was that the same Mike Williams who played Union Cane in Rocky 5?expug wrote:I remember that section . YES!!!! That has been one of my favorite nights of boxing. Immagine any other sport being able to pull something like that.
- Randy Johnson hurts his pitching arm during warm-ups. So Joe Torre scans the seats until he sees Oil Can Boyd wolfing down his third hotdog and asks him to pitch the first three innings for the Yankees.
-Shaq is at the free throw line with the Heat down by one. Pat Riley gets nervous and sees Mark Price doing play-by-play calls for WXYZ out of Cleveland and asks him to suit up for Shaq to make the shots.
- Scotty Bowman convinces Wayne Gretzsky to leave the Roulette table long enough to skate for an injured Steve Yzerman during the first period.
- Dante Culpepper hurts his knees again and Dan Marino steps up to take over the Dolphin offence and finally silences his critics by winning a Super Bowl ring.
Only in boxing!

Unreal. It also happened once before in a big fight at the Garden in 1969. Former Lightheavyweight Champ Jose Torres ' opponent pulled out at the last minute and Teddy Brenner the matchmaker somehow found Charlie Devil Green sitting in the crowd eating a hotdog. Green took the fight and had Torres on the deck and almost kod him before finaly getting stopped. When Green got paid he wanted an extra buck for the hotdog.

My only question would be how was Green able to make his weight, or did they just let it slide given the fact they were in a pinch is what my guess would be. I think boxing might be different from highschool and college wrestling where they strictly adhere to the rules and you are given no leeway for being over the allowed weight limit.
I agree. Lets face it Tyson was 18 or so when he fought Green who had massive height and reach advantages.silkov wrote:I have a number of of fights too... he had good mobility, but nothing special really, I've seen many faster boxers of that era who were better all round fighters too such as Tillis, Page, Thomas, and Williams etc... Ive seen the fight a few times.
Tyson won every round.
like fornicate he did .Nile4000 wrote:Don't know, he sparred with Mike Tyson and reportedly got the best of him.ebeneezer wrote:Was that the same Mike Williams who played Union Cane in Rocky 5?expug wrote:I remember that section . Evidently there is a little more to the Green - Torres fight. At the end of the first round while Torres was down his handlers helped him back to his corner . The count should have continued because the fighter wasnt supposed to be able to be saved by the bell. Referee Johnny Lobianco missed it. Torres should have been dqd.

How anyone can say Blood was not world class obviously shows they dont know anything about him. He was one of the outstanding amateurs in the WORLD. Theres a few tapes of him as a pro, his debut Jerry Folly, Mel Epps, Jumbo Cummings, Tyson etc. He had had fast hands, sharp punching with good variety, a head like a block of cement. He was a top 10 contender but due to contractual disputes with DK & his own wacky ways never got going as a pro. He deserves credit for the Tyson fight as he is one of the very few guys who Tyson could not knock down. And its not like he was staying out the way like Lewis, he was taking every shot FLUSH!
As for Mike Williams that Morrison story is complete bullshit. Williams was never at the arena. He didnt even show for the weigh in the day before. Bob Arum & Morrison knew full well Williams would not be fighting but made up the whole Tomashek PR story to cover up the fact they hid the truth from the paying customers & were going to present a mismatch against a bum for world title ticket prices to avoid people demanding refunds before the night of the fight.

I am not doubting you...nothing surprises me in this sport anymore. However, what is Mike William's reaction to be casted as a bum who refused to fight...stayed in his dressingroom refusing to come out. The most common rumor out there was because he didn't want to take a drug test. Therefore, he would not fight. If this really was a snowjob by Morrison's PR guys, I think there should be some explaining to be done.
Has anyone found an interview from Tomashek, Williams, or Morrison reagrding their sides of the story?
You would think that because Tim did MUCH better than expected, he would have had some nice fights lined up on USA TNF or even ESPN after that fight.
It was one of the Ring magazines from around '85 or '86, I think Mike Williams was one of the New Faces and they mentioned the situation.Unfortunately, I don't have the issue anymore.shyguy wrote:source for the article please .Nile4000 wrote:True story.Read the article.shyguy wrote: like smeg he did .
