Randall 'Tex' Cobb vs. Dee Collier

Post by Controversial »

Did anyone see this fight? Some people say Cobb threw the fight but others have said he was just caught early and never recovered, Cobb was down 4 times and counted out in the first round, it was the only stoppage loss in his career.

At that time Cobb had beaten Shavers (TKO8), narrowly lost to Norton (SD 10), narrowly lost to Dokes (MD 10), beat big hitting Mercado (UD 10), narrowly lost to Buster Douglas (MD 10) and lost a UD over 15 to Holmes so to get KO'ed in one round by Collier was quite bizarre. Collier was 7-4 (4 KOs) at the time.

Read many reports, but never seen footage or a picture of the fight. Ironically Dee was a stuntman in the film DIGGSTOWN that Cobb was in. Collier was better than his record suggests. Huge SOB as well.

I was thinking about this fight myself not long ago. It was Cobb's first and only stoppage loss. I find it hard to believe that someone as rugged as Cobb could be knocked out in one round by an obscure opponent. I wondered, maybe it was a cut?

Cobb was dropped 4 times in the span of about 2:30... The referee waved it off...

Wasn't Cobb pretty much coked out at this stage?

It would probably explain his sudden inability to absorb a shot.

I'm certain that Cobb at least had some pride in his iron chin and reputation as a guy you couldn't get out of there.

Unlikely he would take a dive. How much money could there be for him to lay down against a journeyman? And why? To build up an obscure 7-4 fighter?

After that bout, Collier only went 5-5 for the remainder of his career, although he did take on some capable opponents.

Was he? Boxrec has him standing 6’2” and 210lbs for the Cobb fight

Must’ve been pretty good odds on Collier to win in one round. Not saying that’s what happened but probably more money to make on that bet than the actual fight generated.

Dee is like 6'5..... :-?

If you watch his fight with Orlin Norris on YouTube he towers over the nearly 5'10" former Cruiserweight champion.

Yeah I read that article but it seems to have a few errors so not sure how accurate that was. They refer to Cobb as being undefeated, that he was due to fight “Sphinx” next for the title (which sounds doubtful as Cobb had lost his previous 3 fights) and that Collier finished with a 28 fight, 9 knockouts and 7 losses record, boxrec shows it as 22 fights, 8 knockouts and 9 losses.

He still only weighed 210lb against Cobb, outweighed by 20lbs. He was between 197-212lbs for his first 12 fights, bulked up later on his career though.

And Norris 5'9" lol. Actually Norris and Tyson were practically the same height when they fought so maybe thats not far off. Yes Collier was a HW so no midget, just not sure I'd describe him as "huge"

Collier looks like a big guy with a good punch. I noticed that he also had victories over Alex Garcia and Mark Wills. I guess he's better than his record indicates.

He was probably insufficiently warmed up, and got caught cold. On top of that it's a good bet that Cobb was out of shape and hadn't sparred sufficiently going into this bout. And, as someone else has already mentioned, this fight took place during Cobb's high-flying cocaine years.

Also went the distance with Buster Douglas.

Yes not a good time for Cobb, he lost his previous 3 going into the Collier fight and was dropped by Eddie Gregg in the fight beforehand. He then retired after being knocked out only to return 18 months later.

Tex Cobb was one of my all time favorite boxers, highly intelligent and very humorous. His ex wife actually used to post on one of these boxing forums. He later made movies. I remember him in Raising Arizona. He went to college and graduatedin 2008 at age 54. Not much info on him after that. Wiki says he lives in Philadelphia. His humorous website is long gone.

( from November.13.1997)
(and for some reason there isnt a picture to click on the youtube link here but click anyway to watch)
