Tommy"The Duke" Morrison (filmed/televised fights -1988-2008)

Post by Caractacus »

This 1990 documentary (produced by Bill Cayton)has a lot of rarely seen footage of Morrison's early fights.
( starting with his second pro fight against Tony Dewar in November 1988 up to his 21st pro fight with Ken Lakustra in December 1989).

Watched it. As far as I remember, it was a kinda promotional documentary than a usual one, what was actually logical considering the fact, that Morrison had been a prospect in those times.

Sylvester Stallone used real boxing film footage of Tommy Morrison as Tommy Gunn for a real fight November.14.1989.
that was used in a 15 second montage for ROCKY V( look for Sylvester Stallone as "Rocky Balboa" and Burt Young as "Paulie" in his corner at the end of the fight)

as near as I can tell,as far as being contacted to play Tommy Gunn for Rocky V goes back to September 1989.
Frank Stallone was watching Morrison fight on ESPN and contacted Sylvester saying he would be good for the part
so a day before Morrison's fight with Dave Jaco (September.19.1989) Bill Cayton recieved a letter from the directer
asking him to come to Hollywood for a reading. He went out there and did it.
then the day after Morrison's fight with Harry Terell(17.October.1989).Morrison flew out to Hollywood again and did a screen test
Then 2 weeks later they contacted Morrison and told him they all agreed that he would be a good choice and to come out and start filming.

"30 for 30" was also good. I'd even say, it's the best Morrison documentary. Of course, it's sad, that it has been made after Tommy's death and it tells the sorrowful truth about his tempestuous life, but there are some interesting facts, opinions, details, materials.

14th pro fight-August 1989

15th pro fight-August 1989

Morrison's 16th pro fight (and 6th ESPN Appearance).-September 1989

thiis was also the one that started him on the way as "Tommy Gunn in ROCKY V,
Frank Stallone was watching it live on TV and phoned Sly saying Morrison should try out for the part
as they were still casting for the movie ).

has anyone seen any video of Tommy Morrison vrs Charles Hostetter ?
from October.26 1989 in Kansas City.
I think it aired on ESPN too if I remember correctly.
(Morrison began filming Rocky V at that time and I wonder if he was wearing Rocky Balboa's
Red White and Blue trunks for it).
