Prime James J. Braddock vs Prime Trevor Berbick

Post by Jmangho »

The one who knocked Louis down vs the one who knocked Ali down, who wins?

Come to think of it, I'm not sure Braddock ever had a TRUE Prime.

In an ideal world, we could have seen what Braddock was like without hand injuries.

Either way, I did make a few bunch of matches involving Braddock, this one will be my last for quite a while.

Who do you think wins?

Braddock is too archaic to be favoured in this hypothetical match-up. He was tough, but he wasn't a truly ingenious boxer. Berbick was probably a fighter of a bigger caliber in his times, than Braddock in his ones. Both were inconsistent. But if we take the best version of Berbick, which is most likely his version of Pinklon Thomas fight, we should favour Berbick for sure. That was not only a fighter from the much later era, but a pretty smart and crafty boxer.

Interesting hypothetical. I'd probably have to agree with the Dr. ^

Berbick wins a wide decision or late knock out

Big mistake on my part, I was thinking of Chuck Wepner.

Surely the Braddock that beat Baer was Prime.

Braddock was a mess for the Joe Louis fight.

Braddock was coming off a long layoff in the Louis fight. Still, Berbick looked horrible against Ali. There were several close rounds in that fight.
Berbick looked OK in some fights and in others he was terrible. There wasn't really anyone thing that was impressive about him. Yet he did manage to score some decent wins.
Braddock of course, had a lot of losses to less than stellar opponents. He was more likely to look impressive than Berbick. Each certainly would have a chance. Overall, though, I guess I would have to lean towards Berbick in close, not too exciting of a fight that would almost for sure go the distance.

And in that case, Ali went down, and Wepner was the closest one standing when he "fell".....so he gets credit....but there is evidence that Wepner's foot was on Ali's foot which had a lot to do with that event. But it was ruled a KD.....and I suppose the words "protect yourself at all times" includes your toes.

What years constitutes Braddock's prime, Griffin to Bear? The four 'cinderella' fights wasn't his prime, it was at the end. That's what made it such a fairy tale; call it his 'prime' and it ain't no fairy tale no more. -- Did Braddock ever have a prime worth speaking of? If so, it was probably at LHW.
