Tony oakey had a lot of success for a small man

Post by biglefthook »

I think everyone on this group will know who Tony Oakey is
he was a fantastic domestic fighter and at only 5 foot 8 was always fighting guys a lot bigger than himself

as a amateur he won a senior aba super heavyweight title then the following year one of the senior ABA Heavyweight title

as a professional he has won the Wbu super middleweight world title
he has won southern area,English, British and Commonwealth titles at light heavyweight
he also won a prizefighter in which you beat Courtney fry who is 6 foot 3

he is a stocky build not a real big puncher and isn't a clean technical boxer either
he is a brawler with a fantastic jab

they say a good big man will beat a good small one

but Tony Oakey proved everyone wrong

heart and fitness beats them all

He also had the greatest entrance music and nickname especially when he failed a drug test.

He was Heavy weight ABA Champion in 1996, and as stated he was tiny for the weight lol with a massive heart. He was an animal in the gym and his fitness was unreal, was at loads of his fights and the prizefighter format was perfect for him, he just didn’t stop throwing punches :box: A true gentleman outside the ring!

Normally brought decent and lively support. Saw him a few times. Once I seem to remember he had to come in the ring and explain he wasn't having a fight because his opponent had turned up but didn't fancy it and had left the arena an hour before. Was at Wembley can't remember opponent though now

Wasn’t he sick of getting messed around by Maloney and shit purses so decided to screw him by pulling out on the night?

Isn’t he a preacher or something now?

I wouldn’t say Decent. Trying to get into the ring because Matthew Barney beat their man wasn’t decent!

That's about what I heard, inc that he was never going to fight in the first place, but turned up rather than pulling out so it would bugger up the whole show!
I'm right in thinking that he was treated badly beforehand yeah?
I suppose when you don't sell tickets, the tv isn't interested but your damn hard to beat!

It wasn't that he looked great, or did anything that special, he was tall, gangly, awkward as hell, tough and hit hard, very difficult guy to beat, went up to heavy to get work, and actually did ok there!

After your earlier post i checked his record and saw he was fighting nelson, welsh etc then came down to light HW and was doing well.

Decent = numbers, lively = incidents like the one you've mentioned.

It was - it played out live on Sky.

The cameras were in his dressing room and he just said that he had been messed about enough, wasn't going to fight again so decided to give Frank a bit of his own medicine.

From memory he was one of them awkward and really tough boxers who didn't have any following so found it difficult to get fights.
