Ronnie Clark vs. David Oliver-Joyce - IBF European title - 24 Aug 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

The unbeaten David Oliver-Joyce will challenge Scotland’s Ronnie Clark for the IBF European super-featherweight title on the MTK Glasgow City show at Emirates Arena on August 24.

Image

Elite Irish amateur Joyce (7-0-KO6) was last seen stopping Jordan Ellison in April and has been handed a shot at Clark (21-4-2-KO10), who shocked Zelfa Barrett to win the title in February.

Also on a colossal bill at a venue which will host a boxing event for first the first time in years is a local hero in former Commonwealth and European champion Willie Limond.

Super-lightweight Limond (40-5-KO12) comes up against dangerous southpaw Darragh Foley (15-2-KO8) with both men preparing to make their debuts under the MTK Global banner.

The final strand of a triple headline sees the ever-popular Stephen ‘The Rock’ Ormond (25-5-KO13) face a recent MTK Global signing in Ghana’s George Ashie (28-4-1-KO20).

Former European champion Ormond is determined to force his way back towards the top and was impressive last time out in outclassing Nelson Altamirano. Ashie is looking to make an impact on his UK debut.

The undercard features a host of emerging local talents; including David Brophy, Kieran Smith, Stephen Tiffney, Tommy Philbin, Chris Wood and Aiden McGlynn.

The initial article says European super-featherweight title.. But we know Clark holds the IBF Euro title.

Nelson Altamirano is ranked 950th in the world and Ormond went the distance with him. How's that impressive?

Was anyone willing to attach their name to that article? I can't see it.

What absolute pap.

I’m sure this is about Ronnie Clark v David Oliver Joyce which is a great fight... Joyce was an outstanding amateur and hasn’t put a foot wrong as a pro.. Clark is flying high after beating Zelfa Barrett.. Great to see big fight nights coming to Scotland

The card looks decent. This article about it is appalling.

No need to get so defensive.

I’m not being defensive I just think it’s great if these kind of shows start happening.. Especially the fact this will give fighters like Ronnie the platform to properly show what he can do... Its a good card and hopefully tickets go well and looks like some good competitive fights.. In my opinion looks like MTK are trying to make boxing real and surely that’s a good thing

It will be good to see Limond back in the ring, would like to see what he has left in the engine.
Ronnie's fight is decent enough, I wonder if Iain Butchers commonwealth title fight will be added to the card, be great to see him headline again!

What do you think of this one? - I am surprised that Joyce has taken this fight so soon. He isn't getting any younger, but he's only had 7 pro fights.

Hopefully Ronnie is getting well paid.

I still think he should have gone for the Barrett fight last month though - Zelfa beat a lad form Nicaragua via Spain on points who had a 12-43-5 record.

I honestly think Ronnie beat Zelfa and beat him very clearly so don’t think there should of been a rematch.. I think Zelfa is a good fighter but Ronnie has bigger ambitions..

I like this fight I have watched Joyce in The amateurs and I think he is a bit over rated however same as with Barrett a lot of people saying Joyce will win this easy and he’s a bit special.. I don’t see it myself I expect Ronnie to win this fight and move on to much bigger fights.. I am biased though ha

Fair enough.

If Ronnie wins this one then surely sooner or later somebody somewhere is going to give him a break?

Initial thought is that it's very poor from Clarks management perspective. Good from a fighting perspective.

Beats Zelfa and there was talk of moving on to Euro level and above and instead he goes in against a complete prospect who is a pro novice. Thats a step back, not a step forward.

Not only that but Joyce comes with very good pedigree. High class amateur, beat Frampton twice i believe and didn't he also qualify for the Olympics? He's clearly got skills, looks to hit hard and although he hasn't gone the distance as a pro, looks like a very good prospect.

Clark, if he loses, has nowhere to go. Forget about Euro level and above. Absolutely nothing to gain. Very very poor decision but given how the team have talked disrespectfully about promotors, perhaps it was a case of having to take it or leave it and having nothing else coming on the table.

It makes Clark look like a domestic gatekeeper, especially if he loses.

David Oliver Joyce has a great pedigree your right. also stopped Joe Cordina in the Amateurs.. You say this is a lesser fight that Zelfa Barrett anyone who actually knows boxing knows this is far far bigger.. Too many people in boxing go on the hype that’s spouted by big promoters and there fighters are really protected.. Its not the fact of us being disrespectful to a “big” promoter it was Ronnie getting disrespected.. This is a headline fight live on allegedly and in Scotland.. How can that be a step backwards?? Joyce has better credentials than Zelfa and a win here will push Ronnie closer to his dream of being a World Champion.. That’s what boxing is all about ??

A win here does nothing. Its a win over a novice who hasn't even been scheduled 12 rounds. He hasn't even gone past the 6th. Zelfa was a far better win. Joyce has proven nothing in the pro game.

All a win does is give Clark a bit more exposure but beating a 6 fight novice who hasn't gone beyond the 6th round and has beat up journeymen is not really impressive. The pro game is completely different to the amateur game.

High risk, low reward

I'm looking forward to the fight. I'd like to have seen ronnie get a crack at euro level but if he loses here, as I suspect he will, as Degale would say the buture ain't fright

The zelfa barrett rematch was more principle than anything. This is a forum and people don't know full ins and outs but Ronnie was not wanting people dictating to him. He didn't feel zelfa deserved the rematch. Which he didn't.

As for this fight Ronnie has never ducked anyone so why start now. He's a firm believer in records are for djs and he wants to fight the best and he believes Doj is one of best in the division so why not fight him?

We plan on winning it. And upsetting the odds yet again. No point in believing now but Ronnie again will make believers of everyone. Terry McCormack will bring out more from Ronnie. Trust me

Ronnie announced today fight is off due to a freak accident which has left him in no position to box. Will know in the next 4 week's whether he can rearrange. Devastated is an under statement.
