Anyone think Povetkin is a more dangerous fight than Wilder?

Post by Nightmare Roy »

To me it just seems that he's being over looked by everyone, keep seeing new videos with AJ and Hearn saying "Wilder sign the contract" etc. Povetkin is a quality fighter whose been in many big fights only losing to Klit in points. I really think this could be a hard night for AJ, he and his team really need to be 100% focused for this.

back in 2015-2016, when povetkin was supposed to fight wilder, i really think he was beastly and more dangerous then he is now. i think he had a good chance to beat wilder. he was laying dudes out. look at how he f@cking flattened duhaupas, a guy who went 11 vs wilder without being dropped. compare what he did to takam to how much more durable takam was vs parker and aj. look at how he instantly melted perez.

but, even though povs still easily a top hw, i think hes not quite as explosive. could be down to a few extra years and a few less peds. i think wilder also has a bit of extra danger in that he can be on the outside and still hit aj. povetkin is gonna have to take shots to come in vs aj

in a perfect world, we wouldve seen povetkin vs wilder back in 2015 or 16. who knows if then we wouldve even been looking at this aj-wilder circus

In some it's a tougher fight and in others no.

Povetkin better schooled than Wilder. He knows his way around the ring better. He's a better boxer.

But Wilder is athletic and has that killer punch. You never know what he's going to do next. HE doesn't know what he's going to do next.

Povetkin might be a tougher fight but easier to prepare for, if that makes any sense.

wilder is 1 and 1-2 over and over, his whole unpredictable/unorthodox thing is so overrated. pov actually has a much more diverse output, with a whole mix of straights, hooks, and uppercuts with both hands

how many fights did wilder really surprise with something really unusual and umexpected?

his unorthodoxy is why he still has issues even with much less gifted opponents. its wilders length and athleticsm (including that power) that make him more dangerous. its those that get him stoppages, not because he bamboozles guys with a bag full of unexpected moves

Nope. Pedvetkin hasn't been the same fighter since being busted.

I'd say, he is more dangerous. I believe, in AJ-Wilder fight them both would have been cautious and wouldn't fight inside, Joshua would have outboxed Wilder this way, Wilder wouldn't have taken risks probably. And Povetkin will always pressure Joshua, while engaging with Povetkin isn't a much smarter idea.

No, Wilder is much more dangerous. I’ve never been particularly sold on Povetkin tbh, he stepped up against Wlad and was handled embarrassingly easily. The fact that he’s rated so highly says a lot more about the heavyweight division than it says about him.

And yeah, he’s total sh!t without his PEDs

Wilder ruined a big part of boxing as a sport for many, many people, including me. The reputation of boxing is suffering hard under Wilder and his team, who keeps getting away with fighting bum after bum after bum despite he lives in the same country as Muhammad Ali, how does he dare?! Wilder and his team proof that corruption pays of and that innocent people can still easely get in trouble when they are about to meet Wilder and his team who's as corrupt as it gets. AJ is also losing money every match since the sport is a lot less popular as it should me. Without Wilder and his people active in the sport, AJ would probably make 30 to 50% more money each fight, if not more.

"Many big fights"... Can you name 5 of them that count, or am I missing something?

He won IBN eliminator with Byrd (good fight at this stage of his career, but Byrd was definitely past-prime) and then Chambers (which was really good win, Chambers was hot prospect and unbeaten at that point). That makes 1 big fight. Then he did everything to avoid Wlad and not much after losing to him. OK, Wlad is 2nd big fight.

As he was avoinding punchers for most of his career, and now he is close to 40, he would be lucky if he goes full distance with AJ.

Wlad had to cheat constantly to beat Povetkin.

He should have been disqualified.

That was Wlad at his very worst and he should certainly have been thrown out.

Povetkin is a small heavyweight who went life and death with an entertaining, but limited career cruiserweight. He’s looked absolutely bang average since he got popped, is almost 40 and got stood on his head by WK. Aye he banged out a few fringe heavy/cruiser weights when he was quite possibly roided out of his nut but he’s going to be absolute cannon fodder for Joshua - and I’m far from a AJ fanboy. It’s a junk fight but the division is it’s usual shallow self with the also usual gobshites and salesmen trying to convince us all it’s like being back in the 70’s. Wilder is crude as hell but he’d beat Povetkin fairly easily now

We've all followed the obvious path: prime Povetkin lost to prime Wlad, and prime Joshua beat the fading Wlad. So the next question: Has Povetkin faded as much as Wlad, so as to remain a bit behind him? The immediate doubt is Price's left hook.

So even though it might've been 50:50 against a prime Povetkin, Joshua has to be the heavy favourite. I think Povetkin still has a chance if the ref lets him work inside, but we saw how he struggled to get close to Price. Joshua's not that big, but it still raises a lot of doubt. I don't think it's crazy to imagine Povetkin winning one out of five, though.

Not at all, Pov is much the safer option, hence Hearn cashing in one more time: he’s smaller, older, he’s been beaten a few times and Josh will know exactly what to expect.

The wildly unpredictable, massive, long armed, undefeated, TNT punching American is without doubt, going to be a huge risk

povs only lost to wlad

again, as i said above, wilders unpredictable thing is sooooo overrated. pov actually has a far less predictable and more diverse punch selection. ya, you simply can have no idea what to expect from mr right hand over and over

what exactly is so wildly unpredictable about wilder? please elaborate. its bizarre how his sloppyness is getting spun into some stylistic advantage . if he had length, stlye, and atletism and power over his opponents he wouldnt have had the issues he did. how the hell would guys like szpilka and washington be taking rounds off him? and molina hurting him and giving him a rough night?

him eventually finding the ko isnt unpredictable or caused by being unpredictable , its because of his power and speed to eventually find the mark almost always with the shot we all know he loves. hes had issues with limited opponents precisely because hes sloppy and crude and make mistakes. getting rid of that would make him better, not worse

i do agree wilders more dangerous now though, much longer with speed + power, but dear god this sloppyness as a strength thing is so stupid, as is the idea that a guy who throws the same power shot over and over is wildly unpredictable, we all know the right hands coming

if he wasnt so sloppy he prob wouldnt need to take so long to find the finish, or give up as many rounds. to the poster here who says wilder landing one clean right = instant ko, you ever wonder why it takes so on many rounds then?

hint, its not because hes got this really beneficial unpredictable, unorthodox style that bamboozles opponents and gives him even more of an edge

Ok SMART ARSE how about this, he’s “unpredictable” Because sometimes he looks great and other times he looks like a complete novice... makes mistakes ...windmills, you’d probably get quite confident of knocking him out ...and then he might just land a right hand on your chin.

Anyway the bottom line is he is a far more dangerous proposition than pov, and even you seem to agree with that.

In fact the other quality that makes him dangerous is he is so ultra cautious, sits back, bores the crowd to death, plays it safe waiting for you to make mistake.. using that sometimes impossible to get past reach

Although the Russian, on the correct state sponsored drug program , could possibly turn into superman again, but thankfully this one is not in Russia.
Oh yes and only the one loss then- I must’ve been thinking of his other two losses to VADA.

I wouldn't have thought so, Wilder s unique in the Heavyweight division. Although, that being said - Povetkin is a real challenge for AJ and one that definitely shouldn't be taken lightly. Pov is one of the most dangerous opponents out there in the Heavyweight boxing scene.

It's one of those cases of a less skilled boxer being acutely dangerous 20% of the time. He'd win a lot more rounds with more skill, but he might actually land his devastating right less often.

His opponents have to worry that he won't notice their subtle feints and throw an ostensibly foolish bomb at just the wrong time for them. The threat of his power's enough to dissuade most from maintaining a confidently high workrate. And so it's possible for him to beat significantly better boxers, at the same time as it's possible for relative nobodies to beat him. He's the ultimate flip-of-a-coin man.

But if he fought Joshua ten times, I think the difference in their skillsets would tell and he'd lose more than he won. As a one-off it's still in Joshua's favour, but that right hand will always put doubts in both Joshua's mind and ours. If Joshua wins comfortably it should lessen others' fears of that straight right, and Wilder might go on to another loss.

For now, though, Wilder's lack of refinement and ability to read the smallprint of a fight gives him a psychological advantage by proxy. Funny thing is, if he improved, he might be less successful!

Don't think Hearn sees Pov as much risk. It's a fight that could have easily been avoided even if it meant dumping the IBF.
Expecting AJ to keep it long and breaking down Pov late. Don't think it will be too exciting either

Yeah, it's hard to imagine Pov getting close enough to do damage without taking some crunchers to his fading chin.

Maybe with a supertight guard and lots of head movement, but I don't really fancy his chances.
