MIKEY GARCIA's OPTIONS AFTER THE EASTER FIGHT

Post by Best Coast »

Interesting ESPN article discusses pros and cons of various options available to Garcia after the fight against Robert Easter.

Errol Spence is probably the biggest risk, but there are other options for advancing his legacy like Pacquiao, Crawford or. Lomachenko.

I'd like to see, like most, a unification fight within a year against Lomachenko.

But I would also favor a fight with Pacquiao at whatever weight the Filipino wants.

If Mikey is willing to fight Spence, then obviously he could also take on Pac at 147, and not dick around with some catchweight.

Right now Pacquiao is hot again, coming off his dominating KO over Matthysse.

It might be a good time to try and arrange it. Maybe by year's end.

It would draw big PPV numbers.

Lomachenko might not even fight any more in 2018, so Garcia has no reason to wait.

I can't see him against Spence. Just too much size and strength advantage for the welter king.

Very sensible post top to bottom. Spence is just too big, strong and risky.

Pac is the perfect fight because he's coming off an impressive win over Matthysse but is not as tough at 39 as he was even 2 years ago (3rd Bradley fight).

Lomachenko-Garcia is the fight fan's fight but Pac brings in WAY more casuals, PPV buys/$$$ and global recognition in general than ANYONE else Mikey could fight.

And like you said, let Manny pick the weight since he has the pull. :TU:

First though how good is Easter? Maybe I’ve seen him fight but if so he’s not memorable. Is it an easy night for Garcia v the lanky giant?

If Easter wants to fight like a champion, Garcia should stop him.

If he samples early what Garcia has to offer, and wants no part of it--- i.e. Easter goes into survival mode-- then he could last 12 rounds in a lopsided fight.

Easter often gives up his physical advantages which is suicide against Garcia.

A long jab and good lateral movement is what Easter needs to do. But I doubt he'll employ a sensible strategy except in spurts.

I give Easter no chance, based on what little he's shown during his championship run.

And add in the fact that Garcia is an exceptional fighter probably in the midst of his prime.

The more I think about it, it seems to make more sense for Garcia to focus on making a Pacquiao fight first, and then consider Lomachenko in another year.

Pacquiao would certainly be a much more lucrative fight for Garcia, since Pac is a solid mainstream name.

And at this stage, he's probably a less risky fight for a prime Garcia than Lomachenko.

The only problem would be Mikey constantly jumping up and down in weight, which eventually can play havoc physically.

Garcia fights at lightweight, Jr. welter several times, goes down to lightweight again for Easter, and then would rise to 147 for Pacquiao.

And if successful, he would undoubtedly have to drop back down to 135 for Lomachenko.

It could backfire. But the Pac fight would be the payday of his career and Garcia needs to try and make it happen.

It would only make a Lomachenko bout bigger for both men.

Thank you. I’m very impressed with Garcia. I think he’s a top pound for pound talent. If Easter generally doesn’t even use his physical advantages in terms of his height and length as you say and if he’s in the habbit of squaring up and trading then that sounds like he’ll take a lot of punishment.

I'm not saying Easter has no chance, but I would give him only a 5-10% chance of beating Mikey and that is if Garcia has a bad night or if Easter has the fight of his life. But you never know...that's why they fight in the RING and not on paper!! :OhYes:

I agree that moving up and down in weight can eventually wear down a fighter.

I think that was one of the things that caused Roy Jones to become so vulnerable at age 34 after looking invincible up to that point. Roy was 47-1 before and including the fight with Ruiz at HW and after the Ruiz fight he was only 19-8, with KO losses to guys like Maccarinelli and Green who wouldnt have dreamt of beating him before that.

Can't wait for the eventual schooling at the hands of Lomachenko if he ever decides to take that fight. We all know the Spence talk is pure bluster. Pac might even still beat him.

I see nothing special in Garcia. Sorry.

Mikey Garcia if he gets past Easter will get his wish and fight Spence and beat him, mark my words and remember I said this. He needs to beat Easter though.

Maybe I am, but Garcia obviously sees something in Spence he can exploit and he's a smart enough boxer while the best at 147 are scared. He may have a speed advantage also. And Floyd was able to hurt Spence bad in sparring.

For all the size advantage people think there is, Spence probably isn't bigger than Leonard and Garcia isn't that much smaller than Duran.

i mean, i just cant see it, mikey is very very good but so is spence and spence is much bigger. i also felt like broner got to mikey a bit late on to the body (still a very wide w for mikey of course), and spence is a whole different beast there

Other options for Mikey after easter fight,Vasly Lomachenko are Errol Spence and they both will beat him down,he claims he wants to fight them though. I think its a 50/50 fight with him an Crawford are either he could fight the winner of the 140pound quarter finals.

GGG is bigger than Canelo and Kovalev is bigger than Ward. the smaller fighter did not get "destroyed" The bigger fighters weren't as invincible as people made them out to be. I think this will be the case. Spence will also will be slower and he isn't as technical as Mikey. Mikey may have a higher boxing IQ.
It might look more Hagler Duran than Lomo Rigo.

theres a substantially bigger size difference between spence and garcia. ward and kov are about the same height, reach, and look very similar. canelo before facing ggg had a fight at 164 and ggg isnt big for mw., canelos more just short anyway

garcia used was a champ at 126 and only just moved up to 140, whereas spence is big at 147

Before those fights, I remember when Kovalev was going to KO Ward and Canelo was so afraid because GGG was knocking everyone out. How much has changed in 3 years. Floyd had just moved to 147 and was calling out DLH at 154 and people picking DLH to KO him. Or when Pacquiao had just moved to 135 and people were betting on what round DLH was going to KO him in. I think Mikey Garcia is special. Spence might be slightly overrated now.

ward was the betting fav for both kov fights, look it up before trying that angle, there was more talk about how kov would be totally schooled. in the end they were very competitively matched

besides, spence vs mikey is not gonna be decided by what people thought of ward vs kov or ggg vs alvarez, your getting even stranger now

and btw, for all the cases where ppl generally got it wrong, there are far more where prevailing opinion was correct. just look at the prediction game like its 20 fights where majority was right and like 4-5 where they werent

I agree. The minute Matthysse hit the canvas the last time, Garcia was the first name that popped in my head. Now I wonder who would win? Pacman looked good against LM, but Mikey may be a handful for him at this age.

It has to be Lomachenko but I'm really concerned it won't happen because of Mikeys history with Top Rank.

He did after all throw away his prime years to get away from them.

I have no interest in a fight between Mikey and Spence

Makes sense to me. Pac looked great against Mathysse but I see Mikey as a slight favorite if he fights Pac at 147. The higher the weight the better for Pac, the lower the better for Mikey. Let Manny choose because he is the bigger draw.

The Pacquaio fight isn't a bad shout actually. Manny will fancy it because of Mikey moving up plus I don't think there is anything to stop Manny fighting on showtime.

I think Manny will fight Khan next though, late this year or early next.
