Just how powerful is Deontay Wilder's right hand?

Post by James9753 »

We know Deontay can bang, his impressive record of knockouts can only speak for itself.

But where does he rank in terms of power amongst the hardest hitters to grace the heavyweight division, looking at the likes of Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Liston, Cleveland Williams, George Foreman, Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle, Mike Tyson, the Klitschko's etc etc?

No-one can know for sure. Still, for what it's worth I remember reading that some Kronk insiders have claimed that Wladimir's power was on another level to Lennox Lewis' (whether they were being honest or just talking up their then-current champion I don't know) and that Richard Towers and Murat Gassiev have both sparred Wilder and Wladimir and both said Wilder's power was on another level to Wlad's (that's sparring though and Wlad would have had a lot more experience at the time).

Beyond that I dunno. Wilder's and Foreman's (for example) mechanics are so different though that I figure it would be hard to compare the power they generate fairly anyway even if someone had experience of both.

Wilder's right hand is up there with Shavers for sheer power. It may even be more potent than Marciano's famous 'Suzie Q', possibly the single hardest punch and most famous punch thrown in boxing.

Marciano had beautiful technique and did have to tee it up first but if it landed it was all over.

Wilder is more like a 6'7 Tommy Hearns, less polished but tremendously dangerous. Hearns badly broke his right hand in that second round against Hagler and Wilder also smashed up his hand against Arreola.

In fact he seems to have broken it at least three times in the last decade.

I believe, his power is among the best in the history, probably close to Foreman's and Shavers'. If Wilder is talented in some way, it's exactly that his talent. He has this one punch power capable of turning the lights out for anybody.

clearly deontay has excellent power in the right, it would be good if there were an iron chinned guy around now we could see him against to get a better idea of just how good

wach has an excellent chin , if he could lay him out that would be super impressive

actually im amazed at duhuapas chin showing vs wilder.

His power is seriously impressive and right hand is a game changer. For all his bark I’d consider him a cautious fighter(until he has someone hurt)...but he can really sleep people with one or two clean shots.

It's been a game changer against piss-poor opposition. There is no way to compare him to all-time powerful punchers until he fights more than Luis Ortiz.

I believe him to be the hardest currently active boxer in the division, but you can't really compare him to world class punchers until he fights more world class opposition.

Wilder hits hard. Damn hard.

But how his power compares to others, particularly guys from decades ago, is absolutely impossible to gauge.

Not sure why this question keeps getting raised when everybody knows there is no way of telling?

He hits hard, but he doesn't hit as hard as Klitschko. Klitschko knocked down guys with glancing shots. His power was ridiculous.

The Duhaupus fight is pretty telling. Povetkin laid him out while Wilder was making him look like the terminator.

I don't have a measuring device.

All I know is that Wilder hits hard enough to have knocked out every man he's faced.

That stat speaks for itself.
