Alexis Arguello vs Salvador Sanchez (Super Featherweight)

Post by James9753 »

This was a proposed super fight that was mooted to take place when Sanchez would have eventually decided to jump up in weight to 130lbs at Super Feather. Unfortunately, an untimely and tragic accident involving Sanchez robbed us of arguably the prime years of one of the most talented P4P boxers ever to be seen, and consequently robbed us of what would have been a magnificent fight between the pair.

Who do you believe would have won this intriguing battle?

Would have been a great matchup this.

Arguello was ace at 130. Long reach. Tall.

Really difficult to say for sure cos sadly we never got to see Sanchez at super feather.

You would think Arguello would box at range and Sanchez would pressure fight and try and get on the inside to get to Arguello's ribs.

ARGUELLO wins it for me. 15 round decision.

I'd also favour Arguello. They both were very skilled and polished boxers, Sanchez could be more elusive though. But I guess, Arguello's size advantage could become a key factor.

Both were great but of all the fighters I ever saw the three best in their prime were
Ray Robinson, Roberto Duran & Salvador Sanchez. Saw Sanchez against Lopez 2X
& Wilfredo Gomez what a great fighter.

This could have been one of the all time great fight. They seemed to be able to be able to do it all. Loved watching both of these guys.

Arguello on points. He started quite young and I have a sneaking suspicion Sanchez had already peaked despite being only 23

By the time of the great Salvador Sanchez' death, the great Alexi's Arguello was already fighting at Lightweight. Alexis seemed to be losing something. Maybe some speed. But he still had that wallop punch. Can Sanchez take Arguello's best shots like the great Aaron Pryor did? Could Sanchez frustrate Arguello with movement like he did Danny Lopez? Sanchez was the most complete boxer. Arguello didn't had great footwork and he benefited of guys that took the fight to him so that he could counter with lethal left hooks. We also gotta remember that Sanchez could move that head inside, but sometimes he could get rocked in the inside exchanges. Sanchez would be fighting the best puncher and greatest knockout artist of his career. He gotta be careful. Even though he had a hell of a chin. But, can that chin take Arguello's best shots? This fight was one of the most interesting and intriguing matchups of the 80s decade, but it never happened. If the fight was in 1979 or '80, I pick Arguello. If it were in 1981 or '82, I have to pick Sanchez.

Arguello by close unanimous decision, probably by like 144-141. Love Salvador, but no way was he going to totally take over moving up. Guys like Camacho and Boza-Edwards had a chance to beat him at 130 as well.

Salvador Sanchez is my favorite fighter of all time. I loved him from the first time I saw him fight Lopez in their first fight. Arguello would rank no less than third place on my list of favorites.

That being said I always thought Sanchez was way to easy to hit cleanly. He had a great chin and maybe that's why he didn't particularly focus on avoiding punches.

Anything's possible I suppose but I have a hard time imagining Sanchez walking through Arguello's best shots unaffected. I would lean towards Arguello stopping Sanchez late in the fight.
