Mayorga chances v De La Hoya
Mayorga chances v De La Hoya
What do people think of the chances of Mayorga beating Oscar on Saturday night? I am actually really excited about this one as a spectacle. Odds on betfair are as follows:
Oscar 1/3
Mayorga 5/2
Draw 20/1
My original thoughts were for an Oscar win via close points decision. This is strengthened by the fact that the three judges who gave DLH the decision against Sturm are back for Saturday.
I do like Mayorga and think he's one of the most exciting fighters to watch. However, I can't see him being able to stop Oscar within the first few rounds (as those giving him a chance do).
It will be interesting to see how much Oscar has left but my feeling is that he'll be sharp. I thought he was appalling against Sturm (and should have narrowly lost), but against Hopkins he was superb for the first five rounds before Hopkins began to get on top.
Apart from the Hopkins fight, has anybody else seen Oscar badly hurt before? I think Oscar will come out and try to stay on the outside of Mayorga jabbing for the first few rounds and hope Mayorga slows down. Apparently Mayorga is in the shape of his career after training for six weeks (vs three weeks for Forrest 1 & Piccirillo and four weeks for Trinidad) and surely this is the last roll of the dice for him.
I want to be able to back Mayorga win, but honestly can't see either of these guys stopping the other. If DLH backs off until the later rounds (where he is known to fade himself) and makes it close, it could give value to the draw. Very difficult to envisage a Mayorga points win under the circumstances (judges & amount of money involved for DLHs September farewell).
Any other opinions?

You can't compare DLH in his prime v Gatti (who he appeared much bigger than) with an aged DLH coming off two years of inactivity v a naturally bigger, hard hitting, wild swinging opponent in Mayorga. It's a completely different fight. Mayorga may be limited as a boxer but his unorthodox style and power are what will always cause the most problems - just ask Vernon Forrest.Ben Keilty wrote:DeLaHoya by mid round Ko. Mayorga is even more limited than Gatti and he got totally flogged. Mayorga will be made to look like an amature.

DLH is a part time boxer who hasn't looked impressive in quite some time. He lost to Sturm and got a gift decision and was finished with one punch by Hopkins.hitman_hatton1 wrote:mayorga has no chance.![]()
de la hoya is an all time great and mayorga is just a slugger with a big mouth.
how dare he challenge de la hoya with his primitive skills.de la hoya by a late stoppage.
I won't be that surprised if DLH loses.
I give Mayorga a chance, if DLH has his speed then I think he can outbox him for a decisive decision- but its a big if at 32 and flucuating weights.
DLH does slow up down the stretch, but I am sure this will not be a major problem vs Mayorga - I think if he has his speed he will be too far in the lead and will survive at the end.
Mayorga can whack, is quick and will walk through DLH's punches, something not many fighters have been able to do. Really its only 3 fighters who haven't been backed up by the DLH jab, Mosley, Sturm, and Hopkins - It could be argued that DLH didn't win any of these fights.

Mayorga has a shot at winning this - those heavy hands could cause ODH to have a major rethink as to why he's still boxing these days. Surely he doesn't need the cash, and beating Mayorga wont add anything to his legacy - what's the point of this fight from Oscar's P.O.V?
Mayorga says Oscar took a dive against Hopkins....anyone else thought Oscar pounding the canvas in frustration looked a little.....fake? 8)

A lot depends on how well DLHs jab works. If he can keep Mayorga outside and keep popping away at him, he can perhaps bust up his eyes or cut him and make him think twice about coming forward. If this happens I can see Mayorga getting frustrated and getting points deducted or even disqualified for rough inside tactics. If DLHs jab fails to fend Mayorga off, it's then set up for a very exciting fight.

Different fighter, Mayorga's style was made for Tito, who loves fighters who come direct to him and who has TNT in his fists. DLH is a speedster who relies on movement, timing and handspeed, and even in his prime could struggle with powerful pressure fighters.
If there's anything wrong with DLH's legs or timing and he allows Mayroga to rush him early on, he is in for a rough night.

No chance, the guy was gutted... He was in the fight and I actually think might have been saving himself for a big finale.MightyWarrior wrote:Mayorga has a shot at winning this - those heavy hands could cause ODH to have a major rethink as to why he's still boxing these days. Yes, I have defended this on another forum with a very similar post to yourself.Ulysses wrote:I don't think De La Hoya's stamina is as bad as some think: His late rounds rally against Sturm won him the fight like an old pro, he stopped Vargas and Oba Carr in the eleventh, floored Castillejo and Quartey in the twelth...
For the record: De La Hoya w pts 12 Mayorga
I have no doubts that if DLH is ahead by the 9th, he will find a way "old man" Mayorga to come home the winner.
However, I would say Mayorga will be the stronger down the stretch... Naturally bigger, more active and has done 12 rounds easy.
DLH certainly CAN win, but the difference between tito and DLH is tito's power. Tito sickend mayorga and i don't think DLH has the power to do that to him. This will be a long hard night for DLH and the fight could be very close, a DLH decision would not suprise me but i'll have a few quid on mayorga with those odds. £10 on mayorga points and £20 on mayorga outright.Max Molyneux wrote:Man if Tito can beat Mayorga for two years of inactivity then DLH certainly could.

Jay Nady has got this one so there's a good chance it'll mostly take place center-ring at a distance (favouring DLH). Wouldn't be surprised if DLH 'lobbied' for Nady.numpty wrote:I can see it beeing a horrible fight, plenty of clinches and heads and elbows flying about. oscar has always been good against face first sluggers like mayorga.jamesmcdonnell wrote:DLH is a part time boxer who hasn't looked impressive in quite some time. He lost to Sturm and got a gift decision and was finished with one punch by Hopkins.hitman_hatton1 wrote:mayorga has no chance.![]()

think de la hoya-campas and this fight will be similar.
i'm getting in the beers and pringles and looking forward to see mayorga handed a lesson.
let the class begin.
Mayorga is a different proposition to the Yori Boy Campus that DLH faced, he moves quicker and hits harder.
There definately seems to be an air of "hatred" or jelousy when it comes to fans and DLH.
Look at the posts already
"Faking" the Hopkins defeat has been suggested.
"Lobbying" for Jay Nady has been suggested, and already an excuse if DLH wins -
Already a suggestion that he will be awarded a dodgy decision.
There is mention of the Sturm "gift" but nothing of the Mosley gift in fight 2 (which was a far worse decision). Still even losing a close decision to Sturm isn't such a bad effort in hindsight, and that was DLH at his worst - he was much better vs Hopkins.
Roy Jones gots some abuse during his prime, people calling him Reluctant Roy - but most have praised his balls in the last 2-3 years - nobody has praised DLH's.... He doesn't need this, same as Roy didn't need Tarver.
