Eddie gets out of jail

Post by rhino222 »

Lets face it fellas. on paper it was a decent card for a normal saturday nights boxing. but never never a PPV event. it was ripping the sky subscribers off in a big way.

Eddie was saved by Dave Allens looping right, Takam and Chisora's guts and a decent main event. In all honesty the rest of the card went to plan. Taylor, Buatsi etc

Eddie got out of jail and he knows it.

So, the money Eddie saved by losing big name fighters off the bill (Brook etc)......where did that go? certainly not to the paying public!!

I feel it may be time for a 2 tier PPV system.

9.99 (7.99 for sky subscribers, full price for other platforms) maybe for cards like last night (just!!)

19.99 (15.99 for sky subscribers, full price for other platforms) for big cards featuring multiple world championship bouts.

its interesting, fights are made without a crystal ball, how much judgement of a cards matchmaking should come before and after?

if a card clearly looked shit on paper (not saying this did), but then turns out great , do we give full credit and ask for more of that kind of matchmaking? over time would this continue to produce good fights or revert to expected sh!t overall?

Gets out of jail?
That seems odd terminology given that streamers don’t pay and therefor can’t complain and anyone who bought the PPV had already decided that they wanted to see the card and handed over the money.
It was a very good night of boxing but it’s no more or less worthy of being a PPV than it was before it happened. The argument was that the contests on the bill didn’t warrant a PPV.
In time every sporting event will be PPV so people will pay for only the boxing/football/beach volleyball etc that they want to see.

It was never a PPV show in the first place, the fact that a couple of the fights were good doesn’t make it PPV-worthy. If that was the criteria, surely every card with a competitive fight on paper should be PPV?

At the end of the day, boxing fans in the UK got fleeced of another 20 quid for no justifiable reason. Fans of other sports must look at us and think we’re fvcking mugs for putting up with it.

not odd terminology at all

Eddie would have been slaughtered if the fighters i mentioned had not saved his skin. as a promoter he was lucky last night and he knows it. trouble is it opens the door for more ppv shows.

forget the streamers...the o2 was full and there will have been enough PPV buys (some based on the original card!!) to ensure Eddie sleeps in his silk pyjamas while Dave Allen probably got paid far less then Michael Buffer!!

No.
People would have said ‘that wasn’t very good’ and the world would continue to spin.
The complaint about PPV/not PPV is based on the matches made. The performances are the boxers responsibility not the promoters.

absolutely, and...the matches on the bill, in its entirety, were not good enough for a PPV event.

eddie was fortunate that the crowd went home happy.

Can i suggest you get back into your bed and get out again the other side... :TU:

The crowd paid the same for their tickets no matter PPV or not

I know what Rhino means.
Matchroom would have thought carefully about having a PPV in the middle of summer and then with the headline not featuring a major title or big name it wouldn't have worked without some decent supporting bouts.
To then have the bill change they must have been concerned but were rescued by the heavyweight fights turning into barnstormers leaving everyone who paid being satisfied.

The downside is that they will probably feel that more shows can be promoted as PPV now.

I agree entirely with you. I think "get out jail' describes it pretty well. It's certainly how I perceived things.

I think hearn was expecting a huge hammering if this card didn't deliver given the criticism (quite rightly deserved imo) he received before the show.

His relief was palpable in his interview with IFL Tv after the show.

The big big money is in the ppv not the arena gate.

He was very lucky indeed. I felt sick paying out the 19.95, but did so on the off chance that a couple of the fights were decent. Turns out on this occassion I'm glad I did pay.
However, I would say I'm only happy I've had value for money about 25% of the time.
Someone mentioned a 2 tiered system of charging for PPV.
That's a pretty good idea, not withstanding the fact that some dream bouts on paper end up being boring and therefore perhaos not worth 20 quid.
The ITV box office for Gassiev/Usyk was a tenner, I would feel less like a mug paying out a tenner for gash than I have done for the 16.95 and now standard 19.95 events.
Its all disgraceful really. I pay 25 to 30 per month for Sky Sports and end up doing another 100 a year on ppv.
B o x nation is possibly the biggest waste of 12 quid a month ever.
Add it all up and Im paying about 550 quid a year to watch boxing on TV.
There's an average of what, 6 bouts per show? I dont know how many standard Matchroom/Next Gen shows a year they put on, if I had to guess I would say I watch about 2 a month on average? Maybe 3? Call it 30 standard shows a year and add the 5 or 6 PPV events and you end up paying about £15 per televised show. Thats not cheap.
Can you imagine asking a football fan to pay out £15 per match? Or any other sports fan for their sport?
Its disgraceful.

(I'm shit at maths but reckon Im about right on those prices)
