Ricky Burns/Billy Schwer

Post by Stuarty »

Recently watched a top ten British lightweights show on BN and the panel all had Schwer a good few places above Burns. I don't know much about Schwer although I've seen a few old fights of his. In terms of achievement Burns eclipses him all day.

How do some of the older posters compare the two? Was just wondering :maybe:

billy schwer in no way had a superior career to ricky burns or ranks levels above him as a fighter, even accounting for the holes in burns title wins etc.

panel would probably love the history section here. there they have a calibrated scale whereby each fighter from one era gets more credit then the fighters from the last

Schwer may possibly have been able to beat him on points. But Burns, in his peak, had the superior career, given he beat Roman Martinez in an absolute classic.

FWIW I wouldn't fancy Schwer against Katsidis, unless there was something about Schwer I am really forgetting And underrating

If Colin Hart was on the panel he'd have picked Ali at number one regardless of the weight category.

Did you know he saw Ali live?

He was a good, tidy boxer. Burns can be a bit awkward. Seemed to work for him during his short peak, then everyone seemed to figure him out.

The Burns of the Katsidis, Michell & Martinez fights versus the Schwer of the, say, Colin Dunne fight would be one heck of a contest.

Colin Hart is able to commentate on modern day boxing and boxers without taking any interest or watching any recent fights. Through his mystical powers he can just watch Muhammed Ali old fights and then know everything there is to know about boxing, past present & future.

Was ringside for that fight. One of the best fights I've been to live. Place fell eerily silent when Burns went down early! Burns actually looked like stopping Martinez late on a couple of times. He had to really bite down and grind it out.

Remember watching John Simpson vs Stevie Bell on YouTube (FW posted it) and Colin Hart commentated.

Had absolutely no clue about either fighter despite being an ‘expert’ and berated the lack of power of Simpson who proceeded to stop Bell (on his feet)!

Dinosaur who should have given up decades ago!

And I think he mentioned Ali!!!!

Schwer was a pretty good lightweight, good boxer and technician. He also had a good chin and decent power.

His problem was two-fold, one he cut really easily and two he had the misfortune to fight two of the better lightweights of the era in world title challenges. I remember him dominating the Para Carl Crook who had looked pretty good

Ruelas usually gets dismissed because of the way DeLaHoya casually blew him away in 2 rounds.

Johnston apparently failed a drug test for pseudoephedrine but it wasn't investigated fully.

As to whether he'd have beaten Burns at lightweight, hard to say. It would have been a good hypothetical match-up.

In the modern era where they hand out world titles on the back of cereal boxes, Schwer would likely have been a world champ too, whilst I doubt that Burns ever would have beaten Ruelas or Johnston.

Still, one was a world champ and the other wasn't!

Perhaps but Cockfeeder Mitchell was pretty handy and never managed to land a title.

Burns certainly has the stronger body of work, even in blemishes like the Crolla fight, near misses like Reilekh & gruelling defeats such as Figueroa Jr.

And, worth mentioning, the fight Schwer is remembered for, the classic vs Colin Dunne, was a defeat. Possible that, on the right night, his controlled boxing and straighter punching could offset Burns’ more telegraphed punching technique. Or at least cause great difficulty.

Yeah a clear win. Boxed brilliantly that night. I thought he'd bitten off more than he could chew before the fight but it was a really good performance. Graham Earl was in Katsidis corner that night as well who Burns handed his first defeat to when he was a novice.

Good result but it was a slightly passive performance that left me a bit lukewarm.

Actually think Earl was the British champion at that time but took Burns on in an 8 rounder. Burns came in at late notice.
