Gamal Yafai: What next?

I admit I like him. I want him to do well and I was rooting for him against McDonnell.

He's easily knocking off these Nicaraguan's and other local fighters.

He did well against Jenkinson, Wale and Davis but, McDonnell was hif first step up really.

Who will Hearn match him with next month in front of his home crowd? Another easy picking? A decent name where they know they can win and/or make him look good? He's hitting 16 pro fights. I do think he should stay in the domestic and possible regional scene, that is where he belongs. What's his potential?

There's no point looking good low level opponents and then stepping up and looking very very average against a step up.

Should he try regaining the Commonwealth title? ride with it a little. Is Thomas Patrick Ward still the British super-bant champion? Yafai should just go the traditional route. I don't follow the domestic religiously, so I can't comment on a lot of talent at the moment.

Maybe Euro depending on who's knocking around at the time but certainly not beyond that IMO.

Khal has done well mate yeah. I think his teas out if he ever comes up against one of the other champs though. Hopefully not but it's a strong division at the top. Is he fighting Ancajas next?

He's 27. I would think at that age a British title fight is the minimum achievement. Super Bantams tend to fade past 30- so time is of the essence.
Gav showed him up to be nowhere near that level. I don't know what is next for him, but he better move fast.

I don't know. You have to be the best in the UK to even compete with the guys from South East Asia and Latin America at Super Bantam.
It's a tough division full of really tough nuggety wee fellas.

Is Thomas Patrick Ward still the British super-bant champion?

No Thomas Patrick Ward vacated the British Super-Bantam title to make the step up to world level - and then fought for the IBF European title.

The plan was for Martin Ward to fight James Dickens at Rainton Meadows on 27th July for the vacant British title but Martin had to withdraw from the fight due to a hand injury at fairly short notice. So Gamal should fight Dickens for the British title?

Well maybe, but when Tyrone McCullagh won the vacant BBBofC Celtic Super-Bantam title in June that was also an eliminator for the British title so Gamal should fight him perhaps.

Either of those would be decent fights IMHO but fighting Ash Lane for the Commonwealth title may be an easier option for Gamal.

I disagree. Each top trainer has something different to offer. I have no problem with guys swapping trainers after a loss- it can also be a confidence booster making a fresh start and different approach after a loss.
