Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Damiani wasn't bad. He didn't look that impressive, but he had some skills. For a while, it looked like he was going to beat Mercer. He almost got a title shot against Holyfield after Tyson couldn't do it. However, he got injured so Bert Cooper got it.
Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
That's right. Of course, Holyfield would have won, but Damiani still was able to put his name in the history, when he became the first WBO champ.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑25 Jul 2018, 11:06 Damiani wasn't bad. True, though at the time and for many years after it was not any more highly regarded than the IBO or WBF is today.DrDuke wrote: ↑25 Jul 2018, 11:09That's right. Evander Holyfield vs Carlos DeLeon
Holyfield was chasing and wearing down DeLeon from the 1st round. In the 2nd DeLeon was hurt for the first time, it was repeating from time to time through the fight. Holyfield looked unstoppable and sharp. In the 8th Evander landed a barrage of punches, while Carlos was on the ropes. DeLeon was wobbly, Mills Lane stopped the fight. Holyfield became an undisputed cruiserweight champion.

Michael Dokes vs Ossie Ocasio 1
Ocasio had a great start. In the first 4 rounds the fight was pretty intense and Ocasio made some successful flurries, which Dokes could only take well, but not avoid. From the 5th Dokes began succeeding in keeping away from Ocasio, his jab and movement became better. It seemed, that Dokes took over and was still becoming better closer to the end of the bout. The 10th and last round began in the same way, but suddenly Ocasio landed a big left hand spoiling everything for Dokes. The rest of the round was full of clinching and didn't provide any successful scoring from both sides, but Ossie was showing more effort to fight. Through the fight Dokes had demonstrated better boxing display, but he wasn't able to succeed in his plan for quite some times allowing Ocasio to land the hardest punches. It probably should have been 5-5 by rounds, so that SD Draw decision was fine.

Has had a good second career as a senior national team coach in the ams as well......Damiani wasn't bad. He didn't look that impressive, but he had some skills. .......think the Italians won a few G's on his watch.

Larry Holmes vs Tim Witherspoon
I absolutely love this fight. It was so intense and very competetive. But still it was clearly Holmes' fight and I don't understand the talk about the controversy as well as the one of judges scoring it for Witherspoon. Holmes outboxed and totally outjabbed him in the first half of the fight, the second one was just more close. Tim's biggest rounds were the 7th and 9th, probably the 12th. Holmes proved, that he was classy and gutsy, a great boxer and a helluva fighter able to overcome adversity and control the fight against young, ambitious, big and powerful competitor.

Joe Louis vs Jersey Joe Walcott 1+2(highlights)
Louis wins a controversial decision in the first fight , can only find highlight but from the 18 mins I seen it looked like Walcott got absolutely robbed, he had Louis down in the 1st, short right hand put Louis on the seat of his pants, he was up right away and didn't look hurt, Walcott had him down again in the 4th from another right hand Louis did look hurt and took a knee until the count of 9, everything inbetween and until the end looked like Louis just clumsily walking forward and walking into jabs, right hands and left hooks, Walcott always on his toes as well and TBH it looked a bit of a boxing lesson for Louis who looked the worst ive seen him apart from the Marciano fight
Louis KOs Walcott in the 11th round of the rematch, can only find 8 mins on youtube but Walcott had Louis down again in this fight, caught him with a sweet right hand on the chin which put Louis down hard in 3rd, in the 11th though Walcott got too cocky was clowning in front of Louis switching stances back and forth when Louis nailed him with a right hand that stunned Walcott, Louis the great finisher that he was laid into Walcott battering him on the ropes, Walcott escaped but Louis finished him with a lightening fast 4 punch combination, Walcott couldn't beat the count

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Always wanted to see the entire Louis-Walcott I fight. (and the rematch for that matter.)
Much has been made of Louis leaving the ring quickly afterwards as if that is a sign that he felt that he lost. However, in an interview years later, he said he thought he won the fight. Would be interesting to know if the decision was really that bad. I think sometimes people just see the two knockdowns and make a knee jerk reaction that it was a robbery. Would be great to know if it really was.
The highlights in the rematch showed some major shots by both guys.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Aye it hard to gauge how it really went from only seeing about a minute of each round but from what I seen it looked unbelievably comfortable for Walcott, I knew the decision was unpopular but it looked one of the worst title decisions ever fro the little I seen, Louis mustve been really good in the bits not availableAmbling Alp II wrote: ↑01 Aug 2018, 15:37 Always wanted to see the entire Louis-Walcott I fight. Very good fight, a lot of quality on show in that one, close and the 9th round was one of boxings great roundsDrDuke wrote: ↑28 Jul 2018, 11:33 Larry Holmes vs Tim Witherspoon

Ezzard Charles vs Joe Louis
Charles wins a comfortable UD to retain his HW title against the former champ Louis who had his first fight in 2 years since retiring as champion, wasn't a great fight, infact it was fvckin dreadful, no drama whatsoever, both guys were cut and had swelling to the eyes but apart from that there was nothing, Charles was just a bit fresher, quicker, sharper and busier than the ageing Louis, he found his smaller stature an advantage to get inside and fiddle about getting most of the shots off quicker
Louis at no point looked like being stopped and was making the rounds competitive but he showed next to nothing, Charles just a bit better, ive seen people say Charles is a ATG Heavyweight, he may be the greatest Light Heavyweight of all time but a great Heavyweight would've dealt with Louis a lot more comprehensively

Still Chares won it in a comfortable way, as far as I remember and like you've just mentioned. I rate Charles in top 20 HWs of all time list low, but still in it.handsofstone wrote: ↑05 Aug 2018, 13:52 Ezzard Charles vs Joe Louis

Watching a lot of early Duran.
He’s easy to hit early on in his career, but everything bounces off him. Nothing deters him. And he always seems to do enough to win the rounds.
Buchanan boxed fantastically well but couldn’t beat him. I had Duran way up at the time of the stoppage.
DeJesus 2. He puts Roberto Duran down in the first but loses every round til the stoppage on my card.
In hindsight you realise he’s taking shots and winning round after round against some of the best Lightweights in history.

Joe Louis vs Lee Savold
Louis breaks down and KOs Savold in the 6th, good performance from Louis seeing as he was pretty much finished as a top Heavyweight, he jabbed Savold, worked the body and as the rounds went on started to bust him up pretty bad, he opened Savold up in the 6th and was nailing him with some big right hands but it was a swinging left hook that decked Savold and put him down for the count

Joe Louis vrs Lee Savold was the first fight to have been shown on closed-circuit to paying customers at movie theaters,
but to only a few selected theaters in the N.E as an experiment as to who would pay to go see a fight that was televised.
the rest is history of course.

Evander Holyfield vs Bert Cooper
A one of my favorite fights ever. Holyfield started sharp, he made Cooper look sloppy early and he knocked him down in the 1st round with the liver punch wisely placed after the one-two to the head. Cooper stood up quickly and tried to fight back. The 3rd was the highlight of the fight, Cooper rocked Holyfield in the exchange with right hand, developed the success sending Holyfield to the ropes, which prevented Evander from falling down, but still it was fairly ruled as a knockdown by Mills Lane. Holyfield's comeback after that was just epic, he absolutely returned the favor, Cooper was barely standing. Since then the fight was less wild, Holyfield was dominating. Probably Evander would have stopped Cooper earlier, if not the torn glove in a one of the rounds, which a bit spoiled the success, but Lane eventually did stop the fight in the 7th, when Cooper was taking a lot of shots without punching back.

Jack Dempsey vs Jess Willard
Dempsey wins the world Heavyweight title after champion Willard retires on his stool after 3 rounds after the most savage beating ive seen in my life, ive seen this fight a fair few times and it never ceases to amaze me how vicious a beating Willard took that day, there's always been the controversy surrounding Dempsey's gloves being loaded with plaster of paris, who knows but either way Dempsey landed some crunching blows on Willard and smashed his face and body to smithereens, the "neutral corner" rule after a knockdown wasn't in effect so every time Willard was put down, Dempsey was standing over him waiting to tear in
Willard was down 7 times in the 1st, Demspey came steaming in like a mad man possessed and hit Willard with every shot imaginable , a left hook put Willard down for the first KD of the fight in round 1, he got up but was put down 6 more times in the round from assaults from both hands, he took an absolute pasting and actually stood up to plenty of other shots that should've put him down, he showed incredible bravery and its insane that he made it out of the round, the bell saved Willard after the 7th KD but no one heard it and Dempsey thought he'd won before being ushered back in the ring
Amazingly Willard came out for round 2 qnd even more amazingly he lasted to the end of the round without being put down again despite Demspey showing the same aggressive tactics as before, just boaring in and hitting Willard with constant left hooks and right hands to head and body, also bringing up the uppercut through the middle on the inside which kept jolting Willard's head back
The 3rd was another tough round for Willard, his face was a bloody mess and Dempsey was still roughing him up, Willard actually had a bit of success in this round and was fighting back but the damage was done and he was pulled out at the end of the round

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
I’m still watching Duran fights.
Watched the Lampkin fight again. Weird fight where Lampkin fights really well and picks up a couple of rounds, but whilst he’s looking good he’s still getting absolutely battered by Duran.
Ending is brutal. Lampkin spark out (looks in a really bad way) then half of Panama jumps in the ring and you start to feel very concerned about Lampkins health.
I know Duran fought some huge names at bigger weights but he was a monster at Lightweight. Some very good fighters have had their legacy’s vanished from history because he dominated the division and made everyone else look ordinary.
Watched as much Lampkin as I could. He beat quality operators: and was in the form of his life. Boxed as well as he ever did yet got battered. He was never the same again.
The above is also true about Buchanan, DeJesus Ishimatsu etc etc. The list goes on.
Duran gets hit in every fight aswell. But he shrugs it off. It gives the opponents confidence to try and trade with him and subsequently get battered.

Jack Dempsey vs Georges Carpentier
Dempsey KOs Carpentier in the 4th round of the first ever million dollar gate, Carpentier was the reigning world Light Heavyweight champ who had come up all the way from Flyweight but he was winning the fight, it got messy up close as most old fights do but the big shots from the outside came from Carpentier who landed a quality combination in the 1st, he landed some nice right hands in the next couple rounds as well and Dempsey looked a bit crude just walking forward
Dempsey came out with more purpose in the 4th though, started to hurt Carpentier with some big shots which had him backing up, the camera angle for the finish wasn't the best, Dempsey put Carpenter down with a right hand, Carpentier was lying flat on his front until the count of 9 when he suddenly jumped straight back up, Dempsey put him down for the count immediately with a left hook
