Is hard sparring important ?

Post by Billythekid25 »

Many old school trainers believe and plenty of hard sparring is most needed to keep Sharp

while when Frank Maloney used to train Carl Johansson he used to start sparring about 2 weeks out from fight night

Im friends with 2 professional trainers that have complete split opinions on the matter one believes in plenty of hard pad work is just as effective as a long camp of sparring

Sparring is the most important aspect of your training. I'm actually surprised to hear that Johannson started sparring 2 weeks out. You should be sparring through your whole camp from the start. We always sparred, even if we didn't have a fight lined up...

I think it’s important. It hardens you. You have to take a few in boxing, otherwise it’s boxercise or whatever.

Definitely. There's nothing like it for getting sharpness and timing right.

However if you're having a bad session you must stop and call it a day. Especially if you're in there with a hard hitter - no way to build confidence and no point in getting hit needlessly.

Basically sparring is practice fighting but with far less pressure. How you take your ability in sparring to the actual fight is another thing altogether.

Damn, damn pressure.

How hard is hard? Get into sparring wars and you'll surely shorten your career. Yet sparring is clearly the best practice you're going to get.

Whatever it says on paper I Think he only “oversaw “ the training of Johanesson two or three times with Martin taking charge. 2 weeks out sounds crazy as you wouldn’t spar one week out

A week before the fight?
That's way too close, bruised ribs take a couple of weeks, and if your pushing it to make weight it's tough enough to do that and recover from bumps and bruises, not to mention a cut or even a graze.

YES

most stop a week before , minimum. Virtually none spar during the week of the fight

i think chris eubank sr used to spar more each session before a fight, right up to fight time. and he cut a lot of weight. but he talks a lot of nonsense we know.

This..
if anything the sparring should be easing off in the last 2 weeks maybe 7-9 days before you would stop and then sharpening up fight week.

Intelligent sparring is most important. Trainers need to fill camp with sparring partners that most resemble the opponent. There’s no sense bringing in conventional boxers if ur opponent is a southpaw for example. And it’s also important to know when to slow it down bc a lot of fighters overdue it and bring less into the ring. It’s more delicate than we all think I bet.

Of course its important just like sparring/training games in any team sports. You can be prepared physically very well and be a great athlete in general but during sparrings you learn how to actually use it in a fight/match
