PPV - We've never had it so good

Post by magnus »

What a time to be a boxing fan.

I currently pay for Sky (full package), BT sports and allegedly. In the coming months I am looking forward to paying extra if I want to watch the following (at least):

Golovkin vs Canelo (BT)
AJ v Povetkin (Sky)
Groves vs Smith (ITV)
Warrington vs Frampton (BT)
Usyk vs Bellew (Sky)
Wilder vs Fury (BT)
Matchroom December/Christmas Extravaganza (Sky)

Hopefully, as BT Box Office is coming, the McGregor UFC card can cost me another twenty too.

I think we can all agree we are truly being spoilt. Whether you're a started watching boxing in 2015, Sweet Caroline loving Eddie fan, or a longing for the 1990s, where did my youth and hairline go, Frank maniac, you've never had it so good.

If you hear any dissent from so called fans, please just copy and paste the following "If you don't like it, don't watch" or "It's less than a night down the pub".

Stupidly, I let my principles stop me buying the last Matchroom card - because I naively thought that a card consisting of two top 10 heavys, a couple of top 20 heavys, and two lads on the fringes of the domestic top ten was not worth twenty quid. Because the fights ended up being quite entertaining, I was obviously wrong to think that way. After I watched the card on catch-up the following week, I emailed Sky asking them to take £19.99 extra from my account for the next month. Only fair.

Aren’t we lucky to be fans of literally the only sport which puts on PPVs in the UK

Fully agree. I called Sky last week to ask them what type of lube they would prefer I used for the rolling pin that they enjoy shoving up my harris.

And don’t forget the PPVs will also be full of adverts, just so the tv companies can generate even more extra revenue from them

I would be absolutely fuming if McGregor v Khabib is PPV over here.

Can't see it. There was loads of hype for McGregor Alvarez at the time and that wasn't PPV here.

The average Sky show, which is free on your subscription SKY gets around 100,000 viewing figures.

Last months Dillian Whyte PPV bill got an estimated 300,000 buys...

Like many, I also prefer to pay for it, I think it makes the event (and me) feel even more special.

Eddie Hearn said it was between 300-400k buys in an IFL interview recently.

And I know its the truth because Eddie said so.

Can't see two sky PPVs after Povetkin v Joshua.

Will 100% be one late November early December like usual but not a second.

Was there a BT Box Office platform then? McGregor's name is even bigger now (post-Floyd), I hope you're right, but I've got a bad feeling about this.

If Whyte fights in December (o2, which I think is the plan), I can't see it not being PPV after last month's "success".

Usyk/Bellew in November.

I forgot the obvious - Khan vs Brook is a possibility for late 2018 too.

It's certainly heady times for those who enjoy both the musical stylings of Neil Diamond, and watching grown men beat one another up.

I still remember FW in 96 in the build up to Tyson-Bruno II telling us reassuringly that PPV would be only a 'once a year event', reserved for 'extra special fights'... The next PPV came that same year, Tyson/Holyfield--and that was expected to be a one round kayo! The frequency of them today makes 96 seem reasonable.

At least it's a great time to be a disillusioned, only vaguely interested observer. I don't break and I don't buy.

Boxing fans had it better in the 1980's...when there was no PPV and all the biggest fights was on Network Television.

It's going to get to the point where even the hardcore such as ourselves make decisions on whether we pay or not.

I think I've bought every PPV over the last few years and going back further bought the stuff that was put on Primetime (think Froch v Kessler 1 was on there unless I'm remembering wrong.)

I will say I may not bother with the GGG v Canelo rematch because I'm not that stoked on the result and can just as easily watch a repeat the next day and get the same amount of enjoyment.

I think the Groves v Smith fight is just gearing up to be very surreal. I mean is there even going to be an undercard?

On the subject of UFC. This is going down the same route .
All Numbered UFC events i.e UFC 231 will be broadcast on Sky Sports Box Office from December and all other shows will be on that Eleven Sports.
All about maximising returns now.

When we have:
'Streamers' promoting their web & acestream links all over twitter & reddit
Kodi
Fights uploaded to youtube/dailymotion/pirate bay etc within the hour of it being shown live...
IPTV
Using VPN to sub to platforms like DAZN

Why moan about paying for sports? you can watch in HD on your tv for free/cheap if thats what you want..
Even if you are terrible with a computer you will find something near-perfect for free within 1hour and save your 20 quid if money is the issue.

I have no problem paying for the big fights i want (maybe 1 or 2 per year), but the majority will be either buying in with a friend (via bottle, crate of beer, meat for the bbq etc) or with a stream..... and the only time i struggled to watch a ppv was the early ITV box office shows with eubank Jr. Even the Hughie vs Parker fight had acestream links on reddit and then you just use HDMI cable to have it on tv - quality was good enough that you could convince people you paid for it!

EDIT: my point is if you pay for everything while complaining you are part of the problem. I pay for BT sports on Virgin but the (legit) online version works terrible on my shit computer at work. Had better luck just using twitter and finding a link that bypasses the firewall last night!

Had Sky for about 6 years with another box in my bedroom. My bill was over £50 a month.

Then my second aerial stopped working so I couldn't record and watch a second program. Called them up and they wanted me to pay for an engineer to fix it. At this time they were running and advert where new customers got 2 months free and free setup etc. So I wasn't happy being a customer of over 6 years, never missed payment and had multi-room with all the channels too.

Canceled it and never looked back. I only have virgin internet with no telephone line, TV etc. As everyone in my family is on what'sapp.

This was about 8 years ago. I probably might even still be with Sky and had fiber internet off them too. They've lost a couple of grand, real bad business practice.

With a decent internet connection you don't need a TV subscription or a phone line if you have smart phones.
