The Contender

Post by MattCoke »

The tv show ‘The Contender’ returns this Friday, some interesting names taking part, doesn’t look like it’s being broadcast in the UK though, would have been nice for BT or allegedly to have picked this up.

The first series was brilliant - the whole sugar Ray and Sly thing.

It must be 10 years ago but I still remember Alfonso Gomez being first up and picking to fight Peter Manfredo who was the favourite, and everyone looking at him as though he was nuts - great tv.

Up there with the first ever Prizefighter as being great boxing tv.

My thoughts as well I loved Gomez and a honestly think it's the most excited I'd been about fights in a long time

Aye the 1st series was great with Gomez, Mora, Manfredo Jr and Ishe, I thought it got worse as the seasons went on, they seemed to stop doing the challenges if I remember correctly, sort of strongman type challenges, they were always good fun

The actual fighting was pish though, slowing down jabs and showing it from different angles for effect so every shot looks explosive, cardinal sin IMO

I disliked the show. They didn't show complete fights, and there was still too much staged bullsh*t. Just goes to show that I simply CAN'T enjoy the reality show formula. No matter the subject.

The only thing the show gave me, and is it put Ishe Smith on my most hated fighters list for the remainder of his career. He might not be there anymore as he's become all but irrelevant, but I was always glad to see "Crybaby" lose after that show.

Yeah ... I thought it was great ... (except for the foot-races and stuff) ... I actually thought it would "bring back boxing" ... Hell ... it was on a major network! ... NBC ... but the tide was against it ... boxing was in decline and there was no fighting it ... I was greatly disappointed when it didn't catch on ...

... and I would be greatly surprised if it does any better this time around ... (unfortunately) ...

Because we are interested in this news and most of us avoid the plague and carnage of Current Scene.
