He was excellent. Had the misfortune of running into Duran. Excellent boxing skills and tough as nails. It's too bad there aren't that many of his fights available. The Laguna re-match was so great I'd love to have seen the first. To go into the sun and humidity of an outdoor fight in Puerto Rico and come out champion was a brilliant achievement.

Where any of his televised fights 'wiped" by the BBC in the early 1970's ?

I'm not sure what happened with his fights but there's very few available. I think less than 10 unfortunately.

I'm pretty certain that the first Buchanan-Laguna bout was televised in the US on ABC's Wide World of Sports.

I would think a tape exists.

Yes, it exists. Not great picture quality, but watchable.

I'll have to take a look.

The outcome was a big surprise to me. As I recall Buchanan was a huge underdog coming into Puerto Rico to take on the champion.

My memory was that Buchanan won comfortably with a strong performance in the late rounds.

Strangely it was Laguna who wilted in the afternoon Puerto Rican heat and not the Scotsman.

I've been searching without success. Plenty videos of the rematch a year later.

I notice that a lot of Buchanan videos have been deleted. Perhaps the first fight is one of those.

I settled instead for watching a tape of Laguna stopping on cuts, Mando Ramos, one of my all-time favorites.

Laguna quit soon after, at the age of only 28; I guess 75 fights by your 28th birthday must be taxing.

Laguna had that very surprising defeat to a slick guy named Eddie Linder not long before the Buchanan rematch.

After losing to Buchanan again, perhaps Laguna wisely saw the writing on the wall. Even at 28. He did lose 3 of his final 5 fights.

And Laguna got out just in time, or he might have been forced to cross swords with a rising young puncher named Roberto Duran.
