My friend thinks that Terrence Crawford would beat Gennady Golovkin

Post by hulkmaniac »

My friend who is usually good at predictions confidently told me that Crawford would beat Golovkin. He said that weight won't be a major factor because Crawford walks around at 170 and GGG is fairly small for 160 because he comes in around 165 ish at 30 day weigh ins. He said Crawford is too slick and elusive for GGG and that GGG can't hit air when they fight. FWIW he's picking Canelo to beat Golovkin by competitive but clear decision this time around.

what does he think about spence vs ggg or crawford vs canelo

golovkin is slow and easy to hit, that much is true

Both of them are 50-50.
Spence is not as tricky as Crawford for someone who is as straight forward as GGG.
Canelo's footwork or lack thereof will play into Crawford's hands, but the problem is Canelo has good enough punch selection and is able to slip some of Crawford's attacks.

Crawford just moved up from 140.

He thoroughly beat but didn't destroy the modestly talented Horn.

Talking about him beating elite level middleweights is just that....nothing but talk.

I wouldn't put much creedence into those predictions. It's unlikely that we'll ever see a Golovkin or Canelo matchup with Crawford anyway.

You're friend is correct about the outcome of Canelo/Golovkin however.

At what point did you question his sobriety when he made this proclamation?

This is one of the most off the wall predictions he's told me but he's also gotten some major upsets correct. He said it matter-of-factly with supreme confidence.

I take it he called Alvarez to beat Kovalev as well then? As for Crawford v GGG you could argue that Kell Brook actually laid out the template to beat GGG, as he gave him problems with the speed he was bringing up from Welterweight, which Crawford will also have and Crawford can switch hit.

He was not sure about that one because Alvarez was relatively unknown to him. However, I did mentioned here that Alvarez is a live underdog. My pal most recently picked Ito to beat Pitufo Diaz and thought that Dave Allen had a good chance of beating Nick Webb.

i know a guy who almost always goes with the underdogs in big fights (ones that arent obvious huge mismatches). it means he correctly picks more upsets then most ppl, but he also gets way more fights wrong because he misses so many where consensus was correct

That's not his style. He's very practical and pragmatic. He said Alexander-Berto is 50-50 and Garcia will shut out Easter. Looking ahead he's going with Canelo, Callum Smith, and Anthony Joshua to smash Povetkin to pieces.

If the fight were to happen 3 or 4 years from now when GGG is getting close to entirely used up (I assume, maybe he'll surprise us all, and still be fighting at the Elite level by then, but I kinda doubt it) I could see Crawford beating him.

No time soon though.

P4P, yes.

But the 13 lb. weight difference and the disparity in strength would be too much for Crawford.

Unless he waits until Golovkin's timing and reflexes are shot to hell. Which tends to happen to guys in their late 30's or early 40's....at least in the modern era.

Crawford and Spence will be the top 2 at 147 for as long as the latter stays there. Crawford may even go up to 154 in 3 or 4 years time, but I don't think he'll go up again to 160. And to say he'd beat this Golovkin is crazy. I love Crawford but in reality Golovkin has bested Canelo and Jacobs in the last 18 months, there's no way he's losing to someone who has had 1 fight above light welterweight.

Well maybe. But I think that the OP was talking about what would happen if they fought now.

In your scenario, some years down the line, are you looking at it as Crawford moving up to 160 as a one shot deal?

Or are you theorizing that Crawford has already settled in at 160 and he's been campaigning at that weight for a while?

Either

I don't really expect Crawford to ever be a full time Middleweight, but I could see him possibly moving up to Middle for one big fight, if the money and opportunity was right.

I don't doubt he'll campaign at 154 full time somewhere down the line. Obviously he ain't leaving 147 anytime soon I'm sure. Hell why would he?

Yes, undoubtedly more money to be made in the star laden welterweight division.

Of course just because the names are there, it certainly doesn't mean that the matches will be made.

Unfortunately, right now, Crawford like Spence, seems to be in a disappointing rut of fighting lower caliber opposition.

Can we stop saying that Brook exposed GGG or stupid ish like that? Crawford would get demolished. GGG is an elite pressure fighter that cuts off the ring with razor sharp precision. Crawford gets laid out bad, so does Spence Jr.

 Since when does having Horn as your best win mean that you could hang with a monster like GGG?

If Duran could give Hagler everything he could handle, it's not completely unreasonable to believe Crawford would stand a fair chance against GGG. He is the more talented fighter, with tons more speed, elusiveness and respectable power. Like was said in the OP, Crawford isn't a small WW either.

Obviously I'd favor GGG, but I see where the OPs friend is coming from.

There you go, another flight of fancy bought crashing down to earth! Boo!

Seriously though, Brook v GGG was a mismatch which almost resulted in a tragedy. As of 2018 we have not seen anyone up to 180lbs (Jacobs?) successfully stand toe to toe with Golovkin.

Crawford may be elusive but he's not a ghost.

Poor Povetkin. How can he box three people at once and not get smashed to pieces.

Duran was a legend, capable of performing feats that mortal fighters can only dream about.

Crawford is damn good, but let's not bestow icon status on him yet. Let him actually beat a few elite talents before we crown him an ATG and begin Duran comparisons.

jUst cause a fighter walks around @ 170 doesn't mean he can fight @ 170.

Mayweather wanted nothing to do with GGG for what that's worth.
