I'd say the worst thing about the thread is you acting as if Harper did something brave. He's a jackass.

Might've been drug fueled decision making, but there's been no evidence of that that I've heard.

Exactly ... not as to the fighters ... but to the lowlife scumbag dick-weed punk-ass rejects that mocked McCall ... the same sort of lowlife scumbag dick-weed punk-ass rejects that are taking such delight in mocking Harper ... right here and now ...

I remember Foreman's call during the McCall fight ... he at least showed a little compassion for the man ... as he always did when something went wrong ...

... because Big George Foreman was (is) a truly compassionate human-being ... or in other words ... a Real Man ...

... too bad he wasn't there last night ...

No, I don't really see it as comparable in any way. Poor McCall had an actual breakdown in the ring, and I don't think it was in any way planned. On the flip-side, I highly doubt Harper ever really intended to fight last night.

I can envision a scenario beating that record: Feller looks in the ring and sees what's in there waiting for him, and makes a u-turn without even getting in the ring! Also, give Harper credit for walking and not running away ha ha ha!

Naw, I wouldn't put McCall's name next to this guy. McCall at least stayed in the ring and took some punches.

I posted the vid seconds after it happened and same with the thread title... nobody knew it was a money issue when i posted it... For those who watched it live, it just looked like he had said NAW after the stare.

Some people actually watch boxing instead of reading about it

Not so strange ... he got my respect ...

I spent way too much time in boxing gyms where many of the fighters had nothing ... not even a place to sleep sometimes ... and got used and abused by promoters over and over again ... not even earning enough to pay rent ...

He was being set-up and he knew it ... and he just decided at the last moment that it wasn't worth it ... and it wasn't ... so he just said "fvck 'em ... I ain't doin' this shitt" ... and walked away ... and he was 100% right in doing so ... I agree ... fvck 'em ...

Yours and yours alone it would seem. I wonder if you'd have seen it the same way if you'd been sat in the auditorium waiting with anticipation to see this exciting young African heavyweight take on a very tough and capable journeyman in his toughest test to date.

I get that fighters get exploited and I don't like it any more than you do, but where is his respect for Efe Ajagba? Why cheat the audience out of what they paid for?

"F*ck 'em, eh?" Lets just say I've seen you make better reasoned and more impressive arguments.

HyacinthusTurnipseed wrote: 25 Aug 2018, 14:58 You can see in the pre-fight Harper mugging to the camera and looking relatively relaxed - certainly he doesn't look like a guy steeling himself to make a big statement and upset a large room of people. If I had to guess I'd say he was told beforehand he was up against "some African nobody" and took a smaller fee than he would have got for someone like Arreola or Zhang expecting that the fight was a stay busy, easy knockout type fight.

When he got a sense of what he was actually up against: a 5(5)-0 former Olympian, in great shape and living in America he realised then that he had been shortchanged on what he'd have demanded to face someone like that and the rest is history. Whether that's right or wrong is up to you and it's obviously just conjecture on my part anyway. But that is what it looks like to me anyway.
That strikes me as not a bad bit of conjecture at all. It would make sense of his actions and explain why he didn't make his feelings known before the fight.

I still think it was foolish. Harper is no coward, and no stranger to being in tough fights with a superior opponent. He should have bitten the bullet and given it his best shot rather than tarnish his reputation in this way.

it's all speculation at this point. The only thing that isn't speculative is the oddness of it. It would have been much better for him to had taken a dive after having been hit by a grazing punch. Imo, he looks to have lost the battle with his fight or flight response. Sure, he had been in there before. And he probably had dealt with this issue before but was able to trudge through it. This man's size was too much and his flight response took over. A momentary lapse of reason that he is paying for in more ways than one.

Of course we don't like it. But I agree with seq... I feel a certain level of compassion for this guy. This has most likely cost him his career and reputation.

Just my take.

Yes there are definitely times, I'd agree with that.

As for the spelling, I typed it in full but the filter changed it to "eff" which I objected to because I had been quoting you, so I edited the post using the * being the first solution that came to mind.

The proper spelling of improper (banned) words probably deserves its own separate thread ... maybe even its own website ...

Be that as it may , as I wrote above ... (and being a Classicist-at-Heart) ... I prefer the Classical Roman version ... though I must admit I am also infatuated with punctuation ... (my own personal obsession with Ellipses being well-known) ...

... but the Asterisk is, in my mind, a poor-man's symbol, often used in all sorts of inappropriate ways by the less-than-fully-literate, even though your use of it herein as a substitute for missing data is entirely appropriate and accurate ...

... but the fact that it has been hijacked and copyrighted by Walmart as its logo reinforces my perception of it being all-too-common ... and then of course ... there's its use as a substitute for sphincter ... which closes the case for me ...

... to each his own I suppose ...

Asterix was a Gaul and Elipses wasn't Roman, he was Greek, and the sphincter was an ancient Egyptian. Don't you no nuffink? ;-)
