reversed/overturned decisions

Post by jamamb »

randomly browsing records and i notice this note written for aram amirkhanyans ud win over viskhan murzabekov :
Original decision W-SD Murzabekov 92:92 100:91 99:91. After protest from Amirkhanyan and a review of a different set of officials (Evgeny Gorstkov, Mikhail Kulikov, Andrei Kurnyavka and Sergei Litunov) the decision was overturned to W-UD Amirkhanyan
so the decision actually got reversed to a win for amirkhanyan. we hear about protests to reverse decisions but i thought it never happened in the pros , usually a rematch ordered at best, but then i saw this

anyone know other cases? or even just overturning a result (like to a no decision/contest) for reasons other then drugs?

it used to happen a bit in the ams, i know errol spence originally lost to an indiampn in the olympics but then it was reversed, same for a japanese boxer in london. even happened to loma in a fight he oeiginally lost...i think all these were based on the ruling that the boxer who originally won shouldve been penalized for fouls that werent called

Kerry Hope successfully got a decision overturned; he clearly won the fight but it was initially scored a draw.

Edit: just realised that was the fight which was in the video posted above

Julio Cesar Chavez lost an early career fight to Miguel Ruiz on a disqualification when he knocked Ruiz out with a shot after the bell to end the first round. The next day the result was overturned by the Culiacan Commission and changed to a knockout win for Chavez. Ramon Felix, Chavez's manager, was on the Culiacan commission.

Welsh Title fight a few years ago.
Tobias Webb v Lewis Patterson.
Patterson injured his hand or shoulder and pulled out in fourth round.
The rules on Technical Draws and Decisions was pretty new.
The ref was judging as well and called it as a Technical Draw.
It was announced and the boxers went back to the changing rooms. Webb's team were complaining and the steward in charge changed the decison there and then to a victory to Webb following the retirement of Webb. (It was an accidental injury, rather than foul, so the steward was right)
Luckily half the crowd had already gone home, as Webb was from Swansea (he's Enzo Mac's nephew) and Patterson was from Cardiff and apart from the football rivalry, its fair to say there isnt the best relationship between blokes from the two cities.
There had been a fair amount of nastiness in the build up and the security had their work cut out that night. The wrongly given draw and its announcement no doubt prevented some serious shit.
Anyway, Webb gets called back into the ring and the MC announces to the massively dwindled crowd that Webb had won and he got the belt.
As far as I'm aware that is the only time in a British pro contest that a decison like that has been changed.

Toney/Rahman II
Hopkins/Dawson I

Both weird endings that got overturned.

King tried to get the result of Tyson/Douglas overturned, I think he even got the WBC and WBA on the morning after to get their title withdrawn from Douglas but they quickly saw sense.

I seem to remember Cintron was involved in a couple of bizarre/controversial endings/results. I can't remember how the Williams fight was scored, I think oddly enough a TKO despite the fact no punch landed. I can remember Cintron with oxygen on in the ambulance/stretcher. Then there was the Martinez fight were he was clearly counted out on his knees and then the ref waves it on, only to get a point deduction in his favour later which cost Martinez the clear win.

I'm trying to think of a fight where the decision was announced when one fighter had already left, thinking he had lost. Possibly a late Louis fight, maybe against Walcott.

There's definitely a couple where they totted up the cards badly and/or had the decision change in the dressing room - Wright/Simon. Castillo/Johnston II.

Then there's Harold Johnson and the doped orange.

Ortiz/Ramos I, the WBC overturned a bad referee decision on the spot. Ortiz was ordered to come out of his dressing room, refused and Ramos declared the winner. They then declared the title vacant and ordered a rematch. Referee Billy Conn vindicated slightly by the WBA and Ramos' subsequent eye problems.

Wasn't one of the Barrera V Rocky Juarez results overturned not long after the fight? Maybe announced wrong or something? Can't remember.

Yeah first one. Went from a Draw to a SD loss for Juarez, he found out jn the dressing room. Same judge can’t count and fcked up one of the fights Iisted.

This one is a famous one: decision overturned and then overturned again:

Won't an overturned decision but could've been a bad one.... Burnett v Haskins where one of the judges who was about 130 year old scored the fight the wrong way around because he didn't know who was who
